View Full Version : "Snapping" sound coming from aquarium....
Dr Drudge
February 18th 04, 01:32 PM
I added some live rock recently (bought it from someone local) and I'm
now hearing a snapping or popping sound from inside the tank.
I was adding four peppermint shrimp as an attempt at aiptasia control
and then heard the noise about 20 mins later- it was evening and I had
only the actinics on.
I don't have any fish in the tank but I haven't seen any of the other
4 peppermints for a while. There are a lot of hiding places, but now
I'm thinking that the peppermints might have been someones lunch.
Should I be concerned If I've got a pistol shrimp? The snapping sounds
kinda come one at a time- not a few in quick succession.
any advice?

I have a few Prawns (Shrimp) in my tank and they make sounds similar to
cracking glass.
First time i heard it i was worried, it can sound very loud.

I have the same sound in my tank occasionally, but I don't have any
shrimp. I have a feeling that it might be some kind of mollusk
closing its shell very rapidly.

Depending on the clicking sound. Does it make a pattern like one click or
two click and stop? If it mutliple click or hit, you may have a mantis
shrimp.
Pistol Shrimp will make a clicking noise with their specialize claw but a
Mantis making those noise by hitting against a shell or a mullusk.

Normally these critter will be seen at night when there no light on. You can
try looking for them with either your moonlight or your flashlight to see if
they come out and while making those noise.

I hear only one at a time- or two maybe a second apart.
The sound is like a tapping on the glass- thought it was a hermit crawling
next to the glass at first.
Would a pistol shrimp eat peppermint shrimp? That's the only thing missing
(although they could just be hiding)- still have about the right number of
snails and hermits and that's all that's in there right now. (besides the
aiptasia).
I haven't seen anything crawling around after lights out yet....

I know the cracking sound i hear is the Prawns/Shrimps as there were
originally the only things i had in the tank to start with, not even Live
Rock.
I had a small Prawn in the tank and its click was very quiet, but the other
two big Prawns make a very loud click which wakes me up at night..

If that is what you hear, than I would just not too worry about it. Pistol
Shrimp eating Peppermint Shrimp, if it is really hungry enough, maybe.
According to mine, it does not but I can not say the same of yours, though.
Simply keep looking and see if the Peppermint will show up. Again, like you
say, it could be hiding and may see it come out later.

You have a mantis shrimp. Interesting but destructive little critters. Try to
figure out which rock it is living in, and get it out of your tank (not a
simple task as they are quite clever).
Good luck

Option or Door number 1:
You can try King Marc way......
Find where it live and use a strong narrow stick and stir rappidly until you
see some debris coming out.
The King accomplish three thing in one.
1. Remove the pest
2. Feeding the tank
3. Releasing your anger for losing $$$ a critter you adore / love so much.
4. Assuring your other critter is safe
Did I say three? I meant four.
Or
Option or Door number 2:

Your choice. Your decussion will affect the live of that critter.

If it does turn out to be a mantis, you get him out alive and want to part
with him, let me know.
Definitely a cool creature, just not for a reef or any other tank with
anything but it in it.

I think the best thing to do might be to make or buy a trap and see what
turns up. You can buy them or you can make one. Try the design here.

This way, you can se what it is before you decide what to do with it. Some
people keep mantis shrimp in small species tanks. They are kind of cool.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
I will try to trap it (if indeed I have a mantis).
I probably would not take The King's approach- I'd rather try and
catch it first and maybe give it to someone that will love it.
If I had the space I might have kept it myself.
I'let you know what happens.
Cheers.
