My 3MD is running quite loud. The motor is very noticeable and the pump is
making a grumble noise. Can this pump be rebuilt economically? Where could I
get new bearings and impeller parts?

What type of pump do you use as a sump return? I am currently splitting the
output through a pair of valved tee's to supply my skimmer as well as the tank
return. It is a 3 year old pump that has recently been reconfigured in this
way. It previously was used for tank circulation only and I had a couple of RIO
power heads handle the return and skimmer. Is it coincidence or did I destroy
my 3MD?
I am now aware the pump is intended for circulation only but the skimmer is
small, a Red Sea, in sump with the circulation leg as well.

I had the same problem with mine. Couldn't hear the TV. Switched to a Quiet
One pump but this had overheating problem (burned out 2 of them). I'm now
using a Velocity T3. its been quiet and trouble free for about a year now.

Take off the 4 wing nuts on the front of the pump(or nuts).
The impeller wings have started to disinigrate, usually happens
when the water level gets low and the impeller heats up and
melts the thing. Forgot where I got mine. You probably don't
need the impeller but the shaft that goes though it. If you can't find
it let me know and I'll get you the address of the parts people.
The end of the shaft has 3 or 4 tabs on it that break off causing
it to rattle.

Maybe obvious but just in case, Have you oiled it?

Yes to all that is holy! I do oil my little giant reguarly. The noise is from
the pump end. I have ordered a new shaft and impeller and will replace them
ASAP. For now a RIO 2100 is handeling the tank turnover and my skimmer is
resting. Once all is back as I had it a 25% water change will be in order.
Thanks for the advice. May your fish be brighter than Dory!

As it turns out the front bearing is bad and the armature end play is
excessive. This pump has been oiled reguarly. The shaft and bearing were wet
with oil when I pulled it apart. Looking into purchasing the bearins and
resetting the end play on the armature shaft now
