View Full Version : smelly skimmer

I added a SeaClone 100 two weeks ago. I know, not the most liked skimmer but
it is what I could afford. Anyways, after the break about one week later it
started to stink. Now, unless I wash it out and wipe all the gunk with a
paper towel everyday it stinks up the whole room. This can't normal is it?
Or does it take a long time to filter out enough stuff before it stops
stinking maybe? Any ideas? Its on a 30 gallon tank with an additional carbon
filter for water polishing(which doesn't really work), some softies two fish
and about 60 pounds of LR.

thanks,
Kelly

More knowledgeable people around might differ with me, but I think this is
normal in this situation.

Sounds like your tank had a lot of DOC in it to begin with. When i first put
my skimmer on, many moons ago (sigh), the skimate was really really foul..
Now its only "wierd"... sorry i cant be more specific, but this all sounds
normal.

Remember, you can never skim too much and even an underpowered skimmer is
better than none at all. :D

The skimmer is rated for up to 100 gallons and the tank is only 30 but the
tank is 7 months old so I imagine there is a lot to skim out. Should the
stuff it collects always be thick and slimy or will it eventually just
become a colored liquid?

that skimmer is overrated at 100 gallons is probibly good for a 10g if your lucky :D

if its running corectly it will collect the smelliest nastiest goo youve ever seen. if not
it will become clear or stop collecting. they do actually work they are just really under
powered or really over rated or more likely both.

So then the smell is normal, it is definitely pulling out some dark green
nasty stuff. Doesn't hinder the operating of the skimmer if I clean it every
two days instead once a week?

ok great, I thought maybe having the scum in the center of the lid tube
would help the bubbles climb which would make the scum filter better :) but
thats great it doesn't matter cause I really don't want to have to smell
this all day. Especially since I work at home and only 2 feet away from it
:)

Thanks for all your help,
Kelly

Turns out the smell wasn't only the skimmer but the tank was leaking onto
the carpet.

Try running a hose so that the exhaust gasses from the skimmer pass thru a
bag of very loosely compacted carbon. You can use the spent carbon that
normally you would be throwning away. .

Also, does the skimmate cup get heated by the lighting or other source of
warmth? If so, try shielding it from the heat source.

It doesn't get heated but there is a vent that looks like the exact size of
a pump tube. That's a good idea thanks!
