Anyone have any practical uses for all the water going down the drain when
making RO? Would the RO waste support a fish-only setup....brine shrimp
hatchery...freshwater setup...etc? Just curious.

I run my waste water line either to my garden or into the pool- whichever
needs it most!

Use the waste water to feed your plant or anything that need nutrient.

Well, why bother would be my question. It's just water.
But, that's just me.
If you are really worried about it, you can link membranes
in series. 3 membranes would be 3 gallons produced to 5
waste. How far you can go depends on how dirty your input
water is.
If you don't mind your RO water being slightly more dirty,
and flush a bit more often, or have fairly clean water to
start, you can cut down the flow restricter. I'm running a
50GPD on a 150ml restricter (rather than the specified
450ml), and have for years. I get 100K water (1 ppm). Using
the stock 450ml restricter it was not able to archive 200K.
If you have hard water, be careful what you do with the
brine. If you use it, for example, on potted plants they
will build up salts in their soil faster.
Dumping it in your garden, pool, yard, sounds fine. Brine
shrimp? Probably fine. Awhile back someone wanted to feed
his home's humidifier (also fine, as long as you allow some
of it to overflow - as they are designed, and require.)
Pool? Why not.
Fish only? Depends on your nitrate/phosphate levels - you
may cross a threshold to unwanted algae, or not. You may
also need to do more water changes, since you are starting
with more material in the water. Maybe 25% instead of 20%.
But, all this depends on how bad your input water is.
