250W 10K MH

Just paid 125 bucks (plus 20 shipping) for a 250W 10K MH retro kit. Comes
with a 18" batwing reflector, socket, 10K bulb, 10 foot ballast to bulb
cord, 3.5 foot ballast to wall cord and a magnetic ballast in a steel case.

This is going over my 46 gallon bow front lagoon.

The question here is; Do you think buying a 20K bulb is worth all the hype?
I am putting some really colorful clams in it soon along with some gorgeous
blue and pink zoo... I want the colors to really "pop" and to get a good
shimmer.

Well, that is what I'm told, but I've not seen a tank yet that I like with
20,000K bulbs. Taking pictures in that blue lighting is tricky too.

I guess it all comes down to color preference. I have a 20K 400W XM bulb
with 96W actinic 03 PC supplement over my 65G reef and I prefer the way it
looks to the 10K/actinic combo I had before (I do like the blue coloration).
I think it is a matter of preference but I also think my coralline algae has
taken off under the 20K light.

I used to run sunburst 12,000k I switched to 20,000k and umm im 50/50 I like the look, but
the good bulbs are $$$$ and the soso bulbs are $$$ and the soso bulbs the blue was gone in
2 months, that made those $$$ bulbs way $$$$$$$ plus even the good 20,000k bulbs dont last
quite as long as a 12,000k sunburst. but while there good the light is SWEEEEET, colors
stand out more, and the light shimmer ?pattern?(fill in your fav word) is more
pronounced.

my 180g has only 20kk lighting and I really like it. others think its to
blue but its personal preference. the corals do really stand out under it
much better then the 10kk's.

like Marc said the pic taking can be tricky but a little tweaking with the
white balance will solve that problem.

Im with Mark. I dont really like any tanks that are lit with 20kk lamps.. too
blue for my taste. And to say that all animals will color better under 20kk is
simply BS.. some corals color up better under 6500K iwasakis, and some color
better under bluer (10-20kk) Lamps. (ATM I have everything running from 6500K
iwasakis to 20KK radiums) For a clam system I would go with nothing higher than
10KK lamps IMHO.

How to do disperse the light so you don't just have one big bright spot in
the middle? Will the reflector do a good enough job to spread it over most
of the 46 gallon tank? How long is the tank?

Kelly, each MH bulb lights up 2 sq ft of surface area. So you'll have to
measure your tank to figure out what works. Odds are you'll need two bulbs,
with one or two reflectors.

My tank is 36 inches long (46 gallon bow front). As long as the divider in
the middle og the tank doesn't cause to much trouble, I don't think I will
have too much trouble with light dispersement. Like Mark said, MH is good
for about 2 square feet of surface area, but well will see... But just in
case :D, I am bidding on another fixture.

I am going to try to mount the fixture on a sliding track in the canopy to
allow me to tweak the single light setup.

I'll keep ya posted.

Well here it is, Tuesday night and no light. I contacted the seller and he
says it was shipped TONIGHT!!! Man am I ****ed!!!

This guy took payment wednesday, said he'd get right on shipping it. Okay
fine sounds good.

Friday rolls around and he hasnt given me any shipping info. Hmmmm.... I
contact him and he assures me he shipped it earlier friday. Okay this is
cool I can understand this... Just getting hard to manage...

Tonight, no light :((...

I contact him and he has this cavaleer attitude about the whole thing...
Tells me that he just shipped it and it will be here tomorrow.

I made him give me the tracking number and UPS does have "some" shipment
under that # to my town. BUT!!! It is shipped UPS ground. No freaking way
it's getting here tomorrow, as promised.

If you plan on buying from this guy, so far just be careful of him lying and
make sure you get a tracking number.

Will keep you posted.

I finally received it!!

Very large box due to the size of the 18" reflector.

Everything is present and accounted for, but I can't tell if the bulb is a
10K or not. I am inclined to believe it is since that is what was written on
the outside of the shipping container and the color it produces has a nice
blue to it.

It runs very hot... oh my goodness does it... Ballast doesn't seem to much
though.

I am very upset however as to the service this guy gave. He did nothing but
lie during the whole shipping process. First lied about the shipging it and
then lied about next day service to make up for the first lie.

thinking about buying one of these setups too. Does the ballast make any
noise?

On his website he charges $35.00 for an upgrade to a 10K bulb, but 10K bulb
is included in his eBay auction, probably should be the other way around.
I've read that a lot of the eBay Power Sellers are notorious for being some
of the slowest shippers. Many of them sell faster than they can ship, even
though he now has a message on his website acknowledging his slow shipping.

Ballast doesnt make any noise to speak of... I had to place my ear near it
to hear it.

The shipping wasnt too slow... My problem was the lying... If there was some
problem, ballast not built yet, hey okay... But this guy had to tell me it
shipped when it didnt... And then took a hiddy hoe attitude towards it.

I am glad I bought it... Already got it installed :D :D But I would make
sure that I was on top of this guy all the way.

My only problem was he blatenly lied about it..

I am happy with the product, just make sure you are on top of him each step
of the way if you do buy. I wasnt the only one to complain about the
shipping on him.

Thanks for the info. I still can't decide on buying this guys setup or
not. On his auction he doesn't tell what brand name anything is, makes it
kind of sound suspicious. With that suspicion plus the constant runaround
he gave you, I don't know if he's worth the risk. I guess there is that
crap shoot with eBay though, lower price vs. lower customer service.

I've had bad luck with every item I bought on eBay over $35.00. Bought a
computer for $250 and got a runaround like you got with this guy, shipped
it 3 weeks after he told me he did. Terrible experience and been gun shy
ever since.

I was about to buy from this seller but it turns out I can get the same
stuff from one of my LFS for $130 CDN all I would need is the bulb which is
about the price of the shipping anyways.

These arent "brand name" lights. I believe its a guy that builds them out of
his workshop. Nothing wrong with that as long as it's quality stuff.

So far, so good on that just a couple things I wish were different.

1. The cord from the ballast to the outlet is only 3.5 feet long. Wish it
was at least 6.
2. There is no "on off" switch. Not a big deal, I am running a timer but, I
would like to be able to turn it off with a switch when i want to do
something.

I can totally understand being gun shy. I got other purchases, a 6 stage
RO/DI unit, blue zoo, yellow zoo, coming. After this guy I am all over them
like white on rice. But they are keeping me informed about the shipment
shipping tomorrow. We will see. :)

In the past 6 months, the guy with the lights has gotten 7 bad responses.
All of which are due to shipping issues. On the other side, that is only 2
percent of his feedback total. The others are praises.

If you can deal with the run around, the light is not bad at all.

Yes... My timer cuts the power totally from my light powerstrip in which
the MH is plugged into.

Other than that, I have to pull the plug from the strip to shut it off.
