In a nutshell the problem is my 70G tank established 15mths just shows
no sign of growth in sps, lps, softies everything thives (just) but
for example the softies never quite mqnqge to fully expand, LPS bearly
expand etc etc.
Para's are fine N'rate @ <10, Ca 400-420, ph 8 - 8.1. phos not
detectable. small prob with red cyno. feed 20ml live photo daily.
250mh lights. ca reactor. kalc top off. deltec skimmer ap600, single
tunze stream circulation.
What am I missing nothing looks that healthy, just surviving.

Thanks

Mart

Are you adding trace elements?

Temp? Salinity? lighting?

Do you do any chemical filtration?(ie. . carbon, polyfilter)
How often and how much water do you change?
How densely packed is the tank with corals?
How much flow is in the tank?
Have you worked on placement of corals to insure the sps get the high flow
and the softies and lps get less flow?
How old are you MH bulbs.
Is there a big temp swing throughout the day?
How big is your pH swing from morning to late afternoon? (probably fine)
How many fish in the tank? any big fish?

Cyano can be a sign that the MH bulbs need replacement and the dissolved
organics are too high (add some carbon or polyfilter.

It can be frustrating when the test kits show "all is well" but the
inhabitants indicate something different.

I would suspect some chemical warfare between the corals could be part of
the problem. Some carbon and consistent water changes will help as well as
possibly moving softies downstream of the stonies. (That is just a hunch as
I don't know the answer to the above questions) Sometimes some types of
corals will just not thrive when in the same system as another corals.
Generally sps and softies don't do great together. That saying I have all
three in my 150 reef with no problem. But I have only a few softies, mostly
sps and lps.

I would suggest cutting back a little on the phyto for awhile while
troubleshooting. Also, if you do peform large water changes per month you
might consider lowering your trace element dosing and see how things
respond. It's better to do large water changes and skip the trace elements.
The tank generally gets enough TE from the fish and coral food added to the
tank. If your water changes are skimpy then increase the volume of water
changes and reduce the Trace Elements.

Just a few thoughts. Without more info, it's hard to be specific with the
suggestions.
