View Full Version : Anenome Crabs

I couldn't resist this Sebae I saw in a fish store I don't normally go to
yesterday.
The poor thing was in a tank left in the sub with no rocks to attach to and
under
what looked like maybe 20 watts of NO. I would say it is about 4-5 inches in
diameter and fairly white (little brownish grey). I picked it up for $25 CDN
cause
they thought it was a different type of bubbletip :| Anyways there was an
Anemone
crab that stayed the whole time just under the edge of it and I was
wondering if
they really make a difference. From what I have read so far it seems like
the
clownfish\anemone situation. Half the people agree that they are symbiotic
and the
other half don't. Does anyone have any actual experiences with them? Do YOU
think
they make a difference to the anemone itself?

Thanks,
Kelly

Anemone does not really need the clown > relatively speaking <. But clown
will does not need anemone either. The clown can shelter like any other fish
in a cave or hole that it can hide while resting.

Eventhough what I mention above from observation, clown prefer anmone as
better protectiion due to anmone sting ability. And at the same time, clown
provide extra food source for anmone.

That's what I thought, I was mainly concerned about the crab.

It is probably a porcelain crab. Look it up and see, but they are common
crabs that live in anemones.

Yes it is a porcelain crab, what I was wondering is if anyone has experience
with them and if they think they are
beneficial to the Anemones health.

I have one. He pretty much just used my anemone for protection. I've
seen him snatch food from my anemone. I really don't think they help
much at all. I got rid of all my anemones and my little crab is lonely.

They are amazingly beautiful and totally safe for your reef tank. I bought one
over a month ago and haven't seen it since Day Two. I'm hoping it is just fine
in the rockwork somewhere and will turn up one day happy a tad larger.

I had a porclean anemone crab for a while. He was cool and did no
harm to the anemone that I ever saw but he did make it very hard to
feed the anemone as he would steal the food right out of its mouth. I
had to either move him out manually while feeding or feed minced food
so that much of it would drop through his greedy little claws so the
anemone could get fed. I liked him but he ended up being to big of a
pain at feeding time.

My suggestion is to use a 2 liter bottle or similar with the bottom cut off.
This will direct feed your anemone. The food will fall / drop in and your
crab can not get to it since the bottle is in circle or surround your
anemone while feeding. You may need to add hole in the bottle [if need it].
