I am thinking about buying this setup above but I noticed etss uses media in
their setups and some with bio balls, I thought this was bad for reef tanks?
I also heard etss is like one of the best and if so why the media?

That is an interesting layout.
Because the bioball will remain submerged, they won't cause problems. They are
there to break up bubbles only. I don't like that it uses a Rio pump, but that
is just me.
The filter sock would have to be cleaned weekly (minimum) to avoid nitrate
issues.
