View Full Version : Yellow Tang Love Yellow Polyps

Anything I can do about this other than get rid of the Tang has anyone else
seen this what else do they like? I was actually thinking it was probably my
hermits eating at my yellow polyps but my wife insisted it was my Yellow
Tang, well sure enough I come home today to find my Yellow Tang nipping at
my polyps. What is really strang it is not eating the whole stalk it is just
eating the top portion.
Any advise is greatly appreciated.

I am probably over doing it with the variety but I always heard it was best.
But I am feeding 1/2cube formulaI, 1/2cube formulaII, 1/2cube mysis, and a
pinch of Flake every other day.
So, I feed one of these items in the amount mentioned above every other day,
and about once a week I will put in Lettuce on a clip for the tang, and I do
this once a week because he eats anything I put in the tank and when I do
put the lettuce in within a matter of an hour or two the lettuce is gone he
even eats the stem portion not just the leafy portion :).
So I do not know what more I can do and he is definately not under fed. And
I feed every other day because with the setup I have this has kept all my
water parameters excellent, and all seem to growing extremely well and
rapidly.
Amonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0 to 5.0
ph 8.1
Salinity 1.024
Ca 450-500
temp 75-79

Sounds like he has plenty to eat. I can't help, hope you find a solution.

Try putting in a new piece of lettuce every other day. Maybe the little
pig will binge on it and be stuffed. If nothing works just say goodbye
to your yellow polyps.

In nature, tangs eat all day long. Waiting every 48 hours won't work.
Feed nori daily on a clip, and he'll be focused on that.

I agree, feed your tang dried seaweed daily. As
much as he can eat.
I've had a yellow tang for 5 years now, and he is as
fat, dumb, and happy as I've seen them in the wild
in Hawaii. I have gorgonians all over my tank (sorry
no yellow polyps) with tantalizing brown polyps that
he completely ignores. Even though captive tangs
are omnivores (mine will eat anything I put in the tank),
I make sure that 90% of its diet is seaweed.
At first, my tang wouldn't touch the nori sheets at all,
but he slowly became accustomed to it. Now, it is
his favorite food -- he goes bezerk when he sees me
rolling it up to put on the lettuce clip. (Rolling
the seaweed makes it last longer in the tank.)
Hopefully, if your tang can be encouraged to crave seaweed,
it will leave your polyps alone.

If you have a refugium grow algae and feed it to the tang. Mine loves
caulerpa, which is easy to grow without a lot of light.
Also, you can buy live macro algae at some LFSs. This is the best answer
because it is the Tangs natural food and it will keep in the tank until it
is eaten, so you don't have to worry about the right amount to feed. It is
also a good option in case you need to be away for a few days.

I've been looking at growing some caulerpa in my sump, exactly how much
light would be required under there to grow it and keep it healthy?

Try some seaweed selects by ocean nutrition. That's pretty much all my
scopas tang has eaten since i got him, and he loves that stuff.

I don't think it needs all that much. I have a 5 gallon refugium with 18w
of NO. The important thing is that it doesn't need to be the same quality
of lighting as you need in your reef. You probably have some old light
fixtures laying around, maybe ones that you got with your tank. The plant
grow tubes are fine. Some people use cheap PC lights from Lights of
America, or one of those clamp on metal fixtures with a flood light bulb in
it..
BTW, I forgot to mention, you can get algae mail order if there is none
locally. IPSF is a good company. I would recommend caulerpa racemosa AKA
seagrape. Many people don't like it in refugiums, but it grows fast and
your tang will eat it faster than it will grow unless you have a large
refugium. It also grows well with little light.

I'm using these two bulbs with good success.
$10 - 5100K - http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/0104/new_bulb.jpg
$7 - 6500K - http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/6500Kspiralbulb.jpg
I prefer the first one now, because it doesn't need a reflector.

on the spiral bulb what orientation do you have it mounted? I've had two
catch fire mounted at an inverted 45*. never had a problem with them
mounted upright, just when inverted.

I've never had one catch fire! The one under my 29g is vertical, for over 1.5
years. I think I'm on my 5th bulb for that one. A couple of them worked mere
hours and then shut down and were exchanged.
Under the 55g, I had a couple clamped at an angle, but I switched to the 5100K
about 6 weeks ago, and got rid of the reflector. That bulb runs 24/7 and I can
put my hand on the bulb and leave it there. It simply never gets that hot.
