View Full Version : Chillers: What would you recommend

I anticipate that I will need a chiller this summer. I would like to know
other's experiences with them, and any specific recommendations in brands.
It will be for a 90 gallon and 40 gallon sump (130 gal. total).

Thanks.

There was a thread about this a few weeks ago, and the finding was
that unless you expect your tank to go above about 85F or so, or if
you have some very touchy inverts, the chiller is not needed. In the
ocean, the temp of the reef can swing 10 degrees dependant on
season...whish I could find the article that got posted, my server
dumps all msgs after only a couple days. The gist of the article was
that most reefkeepers have thier tanks set too cold in the first
place, judging by the natural world.

It's funny , I posted this same request back in January and nobody
responded. I also saw the recent discussions on the subject and everybody
weighed in. All the readings suggest getting the titanium heat exchanger
for longevity. I paid top dollar for my 1/3 HP Arctica inline DBM-250. I
have roughly 90 gals with sump included. Keep in mind you can get many more
BTU's for a larger unit for just a little more money. In addition, a
smaller unit will work much harder than a larger unit would. Therefore, the
larger unit would be operational a lot less. Make no mistake, this thing
does put out heat into your home. Just think about passing a window A/C
unit from the outside of the window. It's not that bad, but you get the
idea. I also wanted room to grow. If I decided to get a larger tank one
day, I would have the chiller to accommodate this growth. I wasn't sure if
I needed a chiller, so I set my reef up in December. I soon realized with
experimentation having a room temp of 68 F the tank temp was 80 F running
powercompacts with a built in fan. I tried frozen milk containers...etc. I
just bit the bullet and don't have to worry about it anymore. However, it
was a big investment, but you look at some of the stuff everybody else has
on their system and it's all relative to your needs.

Good luck...Burl

Give www.aquanetics.com a look. They offer many different models and sizes.
For systems as small as 100 gal. to over 50,000 gal. All (or most) of their
chillers come with a 10 year warranty. (or they used to) And all or most
have titanium heat exchangers.

We also need to determine your lighting wpg as this produces much
heat, as well as if your lighting system has a fan as this will
