View Full Version : inside the canopy

I have read a couple of DIY pages on canopies but I have a question about
the finish inside.
All the write ups I have read say to use a oil based paint on the inside but
is there a certain
amount of time I need to wait before using the canopy after painting? I
guess I am most worried
about condensation. If there are drops on the paint and then they fall into
the water won't they
take some contaminants with them? My reflector will be about 3 inches short
on each side
lengthwise.

Kelly,
I used a high gloss oil based marine paint. Being an oil based paint it will
take a little longer to cure. I waited for the "chemical" smell to dissipate
before using. As long as you keep it in a area of low humidity and above 65
degrees it should cure rather quickly. A small space heater will also help
along the process. Here is a link to my hood during construction. I am no
expert but I would wait at least 3 or 4 days

Thanks Ken, is the marine paint from a normal store? i.e. Home Depot or is
it something that needs to be found in a marine store?

I live in Washington State and purchased it from Parker paint. I do not
believe Home Depot or Lowes in our area carry much in the way of oil base
any more. You are better off going to a good paint store for it.
Also I might add that it is really better to put on at least three light
coats of paint with a good oil base brush. You will find the finish will get
smoother with each coat, and you will end up with a really reflective, and
durable finish.
