here in the uk we only seem to get one type of fluorescent tube T12 ? and
the new T5
but any the T12 i have are 42 inches long if I bought T12 that were shorter
say 38 inches long what would be the side effect. I know the balast would
then be wrong and over drive the tube but HOW bad would this be.
Im looking to set up a small tank in my office. I have most things from
other tanks just the light dont fit :-)

If you overdrive a lamp, it will sometimes be brighter, until it burn itself
out, some times it cycles ( flashes)

Have you thought of a small Halide as an alernative?
As you say there are a few T5 fiitings about, but Halides do give a nice
crisp light and you can get some compacy versions - ask Chris at STM what
they have, they used to have a halide on an anglepoise fitting on the
counter!
