View Full Version : caulerpa not thriving

Dinky

75gallon FOWLR

I aquired some caulerpa last week, and put it in my sump, adding a
light at the same time. (a 75watt Compact Flourescent) The caulerpa
seems to be yellowing, and not looking well in general. Any thoughts?
I expected it would just tanke off.

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5-10 ppm
temp 79-80F
SG 1.022 (keep in mind the temp)

Is the light on 24 hours a day? Is it close to the refugium where the plant is
well lighted? Is the caulerpa anchored to some rock?

Hmmm no, plugged it into the tank light timer. Hmm...directly above
it. Hmm..no. Thanks. Will be making some changes this morning.

Any tips on how to do this? I use lead weights from plants in my fw
tanks, not an option here, obviously. Rubber bands?

I'm following this thread as I have the same thing going on. I introduces a
few plants that were attached to a peice of rock about a week ago.

The light is on 24/7 and some of the plants are fading off.

And nitrates do not seem to be going down yet.

Well, I anchored the caulerpa to some concrete bricks I had in a
planted fw tank, positioned them directly beneath the light, and took
the light off the timer. We shall see what we shall see.

some people add iron.

According to the H2O parameters you posted, I don't believe your tank has
enough nutrients in the H2O, nitrates at 5-10 ppm may not be enough to
support healthy plant life.

I do not consider this a problem

Our refugium is a 50gal tank with 2 workhorse7 ballasts powering 2 36"
95watt VHO URI 50/50 lamps that are on 10 hour at night opposite the reef
tank lighting schedule.

I had considered this. I've been doing planted FW tanks for years, so
the theory made sense, but since much in marine aquaria has been
different, I awaited responses from others, but when you get down to
it, I suppose the chain of living things is the same no matter how
you look at it.

Our caulerpa goes nuts then my wife puts in a phosphate sponge and they turn
translucent, I believe both plants and photosynthesizing animals need some
nitrates and phosphates to thrive, we have been doing for years and ours
nitrates hover between 15 and 25 ppm and our animals are beautiful.

You can put a small piece of LR right on the caulerpa, to hold it down. The
plant will grow right over it, and spread roots that will anchor it.

Keeping the lights on 24/7 is the only way to guarantee growth. When I prune it
once a month, I used scissors to avoid it 'bleeding' into my system.

This is the stuff I grew, although I've had 4 different types:

I've pretty much switched over to Cheatomorpha instead:

One thing that most sal****er algae needs and is usually low in most reef
tanks, is iodine. Caulerpa, as well as most other algae, can concentrate
iodine up to 25 times the concentration of seawater in it's tissues.

wanna state your source

generally iodine is not actually low in reef tanks, and the link between any algae and
iodine is slightly lacking

because it *has* iodine doesnt mean it needs iodine.

if you would like to read up on this subject the chemistry and dr ron forums on
reefcentral cover it often.
