View Full Version : Ok what do I need to do now....

I setup a 10 gal tank, just what I need one more tank, but it was
empty so why not. It has 1" sand bed i it (Genuine Florida Panhandle
sand from the Gulf of Mexico, that I had washed, washed and washed
some more, dried, and its been in a bucket and dry as can be for
probably close to 15 years.....so its far from being LIVE sand. Same
for the rock. I have approx 20 pounds of it, and it too originated
from the gulf of mexico off Navarre over 20 some years ago. I had
bleaced the heck oout of it back then and washed and washed and washed
it and it too was stored up in the attic since about 1984 or so....It
was used on a shelf as a ornament, never was back in water until
today. I have washed it again, and its been outside in the sun and
rain and now its setting in the tank. Have a simple hob filter
running, as well as an intank Tetra Whisper, and a MicroJet 600
power head ..so the water is circulating pretty good. I doubt
seriously if I will get much if any at all nitrate / ammonia since
there really is no dead critters to amount to much.
So what would be a good way to seed this tank and get the bacteria
going....Adding more liverock is out of the question, and what live
sand I have from a pico I will add once its cycled, as its got a heap
of pods etc in it....I have may water right now at 1.025 sg, but will
reduce it down to 1.0235 when its fully cycled and ready to stock.

Lights are 4, 18 watt NO florescents, with 2, 50/50, 1 10K, and one
full actinic, for a total of 72 watts all indiviudally switched. and
also a 3" vari speed fan for cooling. Plan on adding moon lights
later. Still waiting on an AC110 hob filter to get here which will be
combination fuge/ mechanical filter. The 10 gal is going to be mainly
for caulerpa and hermits and snails, and maybe one little damsel, or a
clown goby, and yellow polys and shrooms. Its main intent is for
nothing in partcular.....

I just finished the hood, all acrylic, and now only have to install
the lights etc.....

So what do I need to be doing with this tank to get it seeded or
ammonia started........How long until I can put the caulerpa in it?

Is that silica sand?
You can use silica sand, but it does not provide as much
benefit as the calcium sand.

I say its a quartz or silica type sand, as its what is ever so
prevalent on the beaches in the Pan Handle....there is some carbonate
material in it, though. I just decided I was gonna do one on the
cheap as possible scale with what I have on hand, and I have had this
sand and rock for many many years. I just now got as pretty good
reading of ammonia......so its on the way to cycling.

Yea sand from there is silica sand. I'm assuming that you
are refering to the panhandle of florida.

Yep, its just like sugar. The majority of the coastline from
Pensacola to Panama City is nothing but sugar white and sugar sized
grains of this silica sand. Around the beaches and bay entrances and
jetties its possible to get a smix of this sand along with some
carbonate stuff since that is where any shells and other marine growth
accumulate and get ground up with water action...

I had fully intended to go with aragonite on this tank,, but after a
trip to my favorite LFS and getting ignored for the most part by a
assinine employee that is two bricks short of a load I called it quits
and the wife and I left.........

I have always bought sand there that is kept in a large 10 foot
diameter stock tank with a lot of good LR. The stuff teams with
critters........He will not sell 20 or 30 pounds of it but will sell
sufficient quanities of it to seed what ever tank size you have.

I asked the jerk there how much it was a pound, and also how much LR
was a pound, as I only had X amount of money on me and the answer I
got was its $2.00 a pound or it could be $4 a pound if we decide to
sell any of it, and live rock is..............duh, he just stopped
with what his answer was going to be and started to eat his bag of
chips again while stareing off into the outerlimits......The wife
asked him the same question, and he jumped her and said, what the hell
did I just tell your husband........That was enough for me......There
were others in the store as well and two of them I heard saying to
each other what doe sit take to be waited on. Evidently they asked
this dude two or more times for some fish and he just sets there
eating or talking on the phone...Its a shame the owner of this shop
entrusts an idiot like that as he sure does not do the shop any
justice.

I bought a good assortment of tiny frags from there one time, all
which was well suited for use in my numerous pico tanks. I get home
and what do I find in my bag, larger pieces of frags, requiring MH
lights, 2 fish (powder blue tang and some other tang). I called the
shop back up and said what I bought was not in my bag.......by any
account. His answer was well you bought it and paid for it, so
evidently you got what you paid for....and then got smart a$$ed with
me. I hung up. I was about ready to leave with the bag of stuff and
take it to another LFS and trade with them. Heck what was in this bag
was worth 10X the money I paid for for what I oriignally wanted. (They
place all items in a tray on the counter, and as they ring them up
then place em in a bag etc behind the counter, and then hand the bag
to you when you pay and are ready to leave...)Anyway I was ready to
leave for the other LFS and the phone rings, and its this idiot,
telling me I "need" to bring that stuff back, as "I took" the wrong
bag........hell he handed me the , well actually the wife the bag,
which had the handles loops twisted and tied, so I nor the wife took
the wrong bag, he grabbed the wrong bag.......yet another of his dazed
and staring into outser space moments.....well I took the bag back and
there was a fellow with my bag..........he made a 60 mile one way trip
home with the stuff and found it was not right, and I had a 50+ mile
trip as well.........Then while we were exchanging bags etc, the wife
was lookiing over the printed bill, and we were charged for a 5 polyp
ricordia Florida, which I certainly did not buy........($25 a polyp)
so we brought it to his attention. (I'll bite the bullet on that as I
shoul dhave checked my receipt as well) and he says, well it was in
there, so that other fellow must have taken it........It may have been
in that bag, but I certainly never bought it to begin with.....Its
amazing how that place stays operating, but they do have a great
selection of fish and corals and everything is as healthy as can be.

This idiots manners and attention has been brought up to the owner,
yet he allows him to get away with what he does.....and always makes
excuses for him.

Anyway sorry about this rant but later tomorrow I just ay go pick up a
bag of over priced aragonite sand at Petco.....and be done with it.
Its still relatively just getting into cycling, so its not gonna cause
me any problems by adding it now. Ammonia is already at a 3 on my test
kit and nitrite at a 5.......first I have ever seen those colors on
any of my water checks in my entire life......and this is from cleaned
sand and rock without any liive critters or organics of any kind. Of
ocurse there is always pores etc internally you can't visually see, so
evidently all those years of being stored and washed and washed and
bleached etc, still left tons of junk inside the rock......
