Hi, I have a 55g fresh water tank with 3 goldfish. I've heard about
the advantages of using salt in the water. I have been using it in my
1g quaratine tank to help my sick black moor. He now looks fantastic.
I am looking to use it now in the big tank as the nitrite part of the
cycle is going on a bit. I haven't managed to get out to the petstore
(due to a sick child-such fun) but do have some non-iodised salt. I
was told this is the same thing. The small carton of aquarium salt
says to use one rounded tablespoon for every 5g. Would I do the same
quanitiy with with the non-iodised finegrain salt. Somebody told me
that it is very hard to put too much salt in but I did say that there
are no fish in the dead sea.
Can't see that I am going to get out to the petstore this weekend due
to the lovely weather forcast for us here in the North-East but wanted
to start asap with the salt. I'm doing my first big water change this
weekend.
All suggestions greatly recieved.
Thanks for all your help

Hi Mellie,
It seems that the 1 Tbs/5 gallon water is the rate recomended by the most
knowledgeable people out here. When you get higher levels of salt on
purpose, it's used for medicinal use. I know very little about this, so
ask some of the old timers BEFORE you try it. It is done in a specific
way, and for specific periods of time. I was also warned to keep track of
the salinity levels, as the normal rate can lead you into high
concentrations eventually because of evaporation etc. Hope this helps a
little.
If you do a search, you'll find all sort of information on this. Just be
ready to read for several hours.

LIke I posted before to your question in regards to salt. Leave it in
the kitchen, and only use the salt if its for treatment or the species
of fish actually needs salt in the water....

THanks Roy for your comments. I was told and have read that salt can
help prevent the fish suffering stress while the nitrite levels are
still up during cycling. So sort of meditional. I wouldn't just use
it for the sheer sake of doing so. On the box of aquarium salt that I
do have it said that it can be used as a tonic or a 'cycle aid'. My
nitrite levels have been stagnant for 10 days now and I don't want the
fish suffering. The tank has now been cycling for 4 weeks and I am
desperate to get my fish in the small quarantine tank in with bigger
tank. If the use of salt does help then all the fish gain from this.

I don't use it at all. At the nursery, the owner has gone to using
0.3% in all the fish holding tanks, the losses have dropped
dramatically since he started doing that. These are fish for sale,
fresh from the importers, or the hatcheries, many have parasites.

start doing some big water changes get the nitrites down to nearly 0 and keep them
low with water changes. nitrites can kill the biobugs. Ingrid
