Very cool. I think you might be ready for a bottle upgrade and from the
looks of him, I'd be looking at a Galliano bottle.

Thank you, I always have my eye open for that "perfect" bottle, but nothing
ever seems to hit me. BTW, I haven't been able to get on your site for some
time now. Hope you get back up soon, I give your site out when ever a friend
is wanting to get started, hope you don't mind.

Regarding my website, I tried updating my latest project last week and the
server was down. Since then I have not been able to get access to the site
from either of the ISPs that I use. Maybe what Tedd saw was what was
archived on his own drive.
If the server is down, I'll need to go hunting for a new host. That one was
being provided free by another hobbyist.

It was sold to me as a "Snowflake Eel", but I found very little on the
internet about it. I've had it for about 2 years, so I must be doing
something right :)

Just got back on it tonight, must be back up now. I leave nothing cached in
my PC, so if its down I can't see it. I have learned lot's from your site,
been at it for around 4 years and always learn something new. It seems that
the more I learn, the less I really know :)

Thanks very much for the offer! I would be in very good company with
your links, though a bit out of your league as I'm just an amateur site.
My redemption might be that I'm really fond of the SL600 (but I would
settle for an AMG SL55 coupe ;~).
Now that 2cah.com is back up, the pressure is off to move. Thanks again!

I had one about 20 years ago. I'm not even sure Symbranchius is a valid genus any
more and for all I know it's the same fish as one of the ones on that page. Fenner
did a nice job covering eels.
One thing is for sure, you need to do some serious work on the lid. If there's
an opening even less than half the diameter of the eel, it'll get out. Ask
me how I know.
Making sure no opening is as big as it's body diamter wasn't good enough it
turned out and there are few things more pathetic than a dried up eel.
One crunchy guppy - eh, but that big dried eel really upset me.

I'd be quite upset too, I've had this one for around 2 years now and watched
him grow 4 or 5 inches. The lid is a hinged glass lid with the plastic strip
on the back part. The plastic goes all the way to the back of the tank with
cut outs for the filters, heater cord, and air tube. I could probably sick a
pencil though any openings, but that's about all. Of course now you have me
wondering if that's enough, I did lose a "tire track" eel once. He lived
under the substrate most of the time, so I wasn't really sure if he was in
there or not, but one day my dogs found him on the floor. That was fun "hey
dad, look what we found"!!
The things we go through.

Having tried, I'd advice against that. They'll eat any other fish in
the tank which they suspect will fit in their mouth, they'll rearrange
anthing in the tank that's not physically bolted down (not kidding -
my 50cm eel pushed around rocks the size of footballs; every morning
the tank was completely rearranged), it's an escape artist, and yes,
it's nocturnal.
There's plenty of interesting european fishes to keep in aquaria, but
eel isn't really one of them. IME, IMO, YMMV etc.

You make me think about keeping one of our European eels. Is
your eel a nocturnal fish?

Yes he is nocturnal, but he can be quite active during the day. He lives
with a Black Ghost knife fish (also nocturnal) and a Bristle Nose pleco. As
Mean_Chlorine pointed out, he does eat fish. I even tried Giant Danios (very
fast), but either the eel or the knife was getting them, I don't know which.
I don't know how long 50cm's is, but mine is 18+ inches long and the only
thing he pushes over is a broken clay pot. Both the eel and knife are fed
feeder guppies and ghost shrimp (sorry guppy keepers and shrimp lovers)
about 2 dozen of each weekly. This is one of my favorite tanks (ok, I'm
lying, I couldn't imagine not having any of my tanks), but it could not be a
community tank by any stretch of the imagination. As also pointed out, keep
a tight lid on it :) After everyone oohhs and aahhhs over my other tanks,
they usually end up watching the eel for some time.

What an eel! It must have studied interior design and sport
at the GSU (Gulf Stream University). :-)
Possibly a buddy for my pond mussels?

Of course, I did.

I wouldn't put it past it. It was an interesting animal, to be sure. I
caught it with rod & line, and as it was too small to eat I put it in
a bucket to take home to my aquarium. When I got home it had bled so
profusely in the bucket that the water was pink, and I was sure it
wouldn't survive. Well, it started eating the other fish that same
night. I became more and more impressed by the things it'd eat
_anything_, so on a bet with my brother I tried with a thick slice of
salami (yes, really!), and sure enough, in the morning the slice was
gone.
It was the rearranging of the rocks which made me get rid of it -
hearing it burrow under big rocks at night and tip them over made me
nervous that it might crack a pane of the aquarium.
So I released it again. That's another advantage of local species.
>Possibly a buddy for my pond mussels?
Why not. I don't think it'll eat mussels.
