View Full Version : Parrot Cichlid

A woman I chanced to meet today regarding her giving me her cat
mentioned that she has a 55 gallon aquarium Oh yeah? Me too! Oh
really! Maybe you can help me. (uh oh, here it comes) I was lucky
enough to buy one of the last parrot fish when I lived in Virginia
before they were outlawed . . . and she listed down some of his
symptoms and the list of medications she has poured into the stew. I
never got into cichlids outside of South America, and I was at a
disinterested phase hobby wise when they became popular. I remember
some kind of controversy about them, but not the details. OK. I don't
know anything about this fish. And I don't want to know more than I
need to know in order to point her in the right direction. Before I
email back to this lady and ask for her water quality measurements and
further details, will someone please fill me in on these fish? On
first take, it sounds like she's dealing with some kind of fungus, but
I really don't know where this is going to go. Come to think of it, I
don't even know what continent they are/were from. And why are they
banned?

A blood parrot is a cross breed between a Red Devil and a Gold Sevrum. The
reason they were probably outlawed is that many breeders inject them, "Jelly
Bean Parrot". But as such they are just like any other hybrid and painted
fish. I am guessing this is the parrot cichlid you are talking about.
There is also a central american cichlid with a common name of Maccaw
Cichlid or Parrot Cichlid scientific name Copora nicarquense. This is a
central american cichlid that has a long body.

By popular demand, I'm keeping to a bottom-post and brought Todd with me.
Their behaviour is basically like typical medium-sized
central/south-american cichlids (Severums=south and Red Devil=central, I
think), though there is still discussion on whether that is the source
of this hybrid. It's hard to predict their behaviour much more than
that, as their Red Devil parentage is of a much more aggressive fish, and
their Severum parentage is more laid-back (like a Discus with shoulder
pads) until provoked. Accordingly, they can be docile or aggressive,
diggers, or not etc.
I would email her about the usual stuff, especially for a fungal problem
(water changes, state of filters, bioload etc). As a consequence of
their hybridization, some of their organs can be quite distorted, and
I've read that infant mortality is high. It sounds unrelated, just an
FYI.
I'd not heard of anyone outlawing them. Sort of gives me mixed feelings.
There is the obvious hoorah (are dyed fish banned too?), and a shudder as
to the real expertise of the decision makers. I don't have a ....
tremendous faith in lawmakers, and when it comes to specialized topics, I
hope they're getting their guidance from experts (not lobbyists).

I live in northern VA. We lost a really good LFS last year when
PetSmart wanted to move into the shopping center. They did sell
several fish with various Parrot names. They also (sob) did sell
painted/dyed fish.
We do have one other FRESHwater LFS nearby, and to date I have not
seen either *parrot* or painted/dyed fish there.
