View Full Version : Acrylic - How hard can it be

Hi,

I had ordered a SeaClearII 40 gallon tank from Petco. They drop-ship those
from the vendor. It took them more than 6 weeks and when it finally arrived,
it was broken :-(

Since I got vacation now, I wanted to set up the new tank. So I called about
a dozen shops in the area. Nobody seems to have acrylic tanks in stock.

I live in the Metro Detroit area - any suggestions where I might be able to
find one?

Thanks!

I am not realy questioning your wanting an acrylic but merely
interested in why acrylic over glass. I had a few acrylics and to be
honest, I was glad when the last one left here and was replaced with
glass......They start of just fine, but over time it gets harder and
harder to keep em free of scratches etc...I have glass tanks over 30
years old and never presented that problem. I do have predominately
sal****er but do still have a heap of freshwater as well, and IMHO
acrylics and SW suck big time.....

Not familiar with any shops in MI, and its probaby to late to order
one and have it received in time to play with it during your vacation.
HOw about another neaby town perhaps.do a yellow pages search and
maybe make a short road trip if one is located in another town.....
Regards

Check your local papers under pets or aquariums for sale. How about your
local free PennySaver paper? All cities seem to have these and just about
all have a pet section. Call all your local Goodwill, Salvation Army and
other such stores. I was told by a worker there that people donate tanks
all the time. I found some excellent 1g tanks for my bettas there for under
$1 each. Try the consignment shops. Call the LFS as some carry used or
"pre owned" tanks. Check out the For-Sale bulletin boards at stores that
allow them. Most will probably be glass though.

I have a smaller 6 gallon acrylic that I use for quarantine. I never had
any problems with it, no scratches either. I like the very round edges
and the fact that there are no seems.

Already called lots of stores in a 50 mile radius. Most say that they don't
keep acrylic tanks in stock because they are too expensive. I did find one
store where they say they can get one in just a few days. I'll probably give
that a shot.

Thanks!

Okay, I can't resist: of course it was broken. It was drop-shipped. Next
time, ask them to carry it.

LOL, *ouch*
ok so now you've made me post, so I have to add something
semi-intelligent:

Here is a site which I think did a credible comparison between glass and
plastic tanks (acrylic sounds better than plastic, but if they called
them plastic, they would sell a lot less, acrylic *is* plastic). The
site has a slight bias (towards plastic), but I thought it was well
written.

Personally I prefer glass, but I have no experience with large acrylic
tanks, so my preference is not overly meaningful ;~).

Look at reycler.com; it used tobe a Los Angeles specific classified
wekly newspaper that went web, then national. But is't still
moslty LA.

Acrylic tanks seem to be mostly a west coast thing and there's
a fair number of them in the recycler; they're light and don't
brek when you ship them. And on a good day you can get them for
a buck a gallon.

LOL - falling off my chair here :)

Well, I gave it up - couldn't get a darn *plastic* fish tank in all of Metro
Detroit. Even the stores that advertise for plastic tanks on their websites
don't really *carry* (No pun intended) them, they also have 'em
drop-shipped.

So I went with one store where the owner claims he has an excellent
relationship with the vendor (Casco) of the SeaClear tank. He says he can
get one CARRIED here pretty quickly. I hope he's right, my 6 Gallon is
crowded, the Mollies got 16 youngsters recently.

Thanks for all your responses!
