View Full Version : Deluxe Reef Devil skimmer Good or Bad choice

I just bought a Deluxe Reef Devil skimmer with a Mag 7 pump and am now
questioning my skimmer selection. It's been a while since I did any
skimmer research but as I recall the ETSS skimmers were some of the
best on the market. The skimmer is way out performing the Turbo
Berlin Classic it replaced. The only problem I have with it is that
whenever I feed the fish Formula I or II frozen cubes the skimmer goes
nuts. It will pull out a quart of wet skimmate in about 12 hours
before it settles down and operates normal again. Is this normal? I
don't want to change the foods I've been feeding my reef for years but
at the same time can't deal with the skimmer pulling out a quart of
water everytime I drop a couple of cubes in. Any advise or help is
appreciated.
TIA

Dave,
I'm running a Sea Clone 100 and have to shut it down (as well as thw
wave maker) for about an hour when I feed my aquarium. Otherwise all
that DT's Phytoplankton ends up right in the skimmer. Maybe you could do
the same with yours?

Well it sure does not take much to outperform a Berlin anyhow, but the
ETSS is a very good skimmer. Its perfectly normal for a skimmer that
is working properly to go nuts when things are added such as feeds,
supplements etc. I prefer a dry skimtimate myself. That way the
collection cup does not fill up quick, but it still effectively skims
out proteins. Can you adjust the bubble column down a bit so there is
more reaction time for it to dry somewhat before being pushed into the
collectin cup? That may also help curb it from gong as crazy when yu
feed. I find on my skimmers when I run them for dry skim they do not
react as much as when I run them wet.

I've got the same skimmer and pump combo. The mag7 is a bit more
powerfull than the stock pump. I've added a throttle valve to my
intake line and it helps considerably. It takes a few weeks of
running to really break in and get the adjustments right, but it is a
good high volume skimmer imho.

I have one as well, and it works like a champ. This Throttle valve you
mention; is that something to control the flow of water into the skimmer? I
could use a little more control over mine, I suppose....
Thanks, Mike

Thanks for the help guy. Not sure why the skimmer goes nuts but I'll
try to leave it off longer the next time. The last time I had it shut
off for a couple of hours before plugging it back in. I'll try again
this weekend when I have time to watch it.
