View Full Version : 12 lb CAT fish!!

February 19th 06, 04:52 PM
Funny story; my old 55 gal "project" fish tank set up is now in the
house empty and close to ready for reseal.... One of my cats has made
it his hang out and loves to go in there! It is so funny, his name is
"Little Darkie" and he's a very funny guy. When in there he rolls
around and will (playfully) attack me when I pet him in there. I put
another kitty in there and he got very torritorial, I guess he really
likes his new nitch.

I wasn't sure if this was a stroy for the fish or cat group so I posted
to both as it is closely related in this case.

=^o^=

Best wishes all, Karl.

Actually I had more a picture of the cat launching itself into the tank
once it had been filled with water - lol - maybe I have a crueller sense
of humour...certainly would be one soggy moggy...

BTW is it a kitty? - wish my moggy was only 12Lbs when he launches
himself at me :-)

Especially if the cat is still in the tank! LOL. I hope he's wearing his
armour at the time.

Mine don't show much interest in the fish, although one likes the heat from
the office tank.

IIRC there is also one about 'how to wash a cat' authored by 'the dog'.
something about a toilet.

ours likes to sit on the hood of the 75gal. and glare at the dog.

Gill...How large is your kitty?
My (late) big guy was a domestic short hair..mutt for short. = )
He was 18 pounds of huge male cat with a lovely kitten like face (not
the regular Tomacat face).
As large as he was (not fatwise...but a big cat), he was nothing
compared to one of those Mainecoon cats. Those things are Bobcats!
Sheesh.

I'll encourage this off topic messaging just long enough to say
Greetings From The Great State Of Maine, home of the Maine Coon Cat.
My old Coon Robby died recently, my other 4 cats all have Coon mixed
into their blood. Coons often weigh between 15 and 30 pounds. Aquarium
glass hoods are pretty strong, but my big boy, Popeye, who adds a few
extra pounds during the long winters, has busted two glass tops while
attempting to launch or land, I've never caught him in the act, I just
find the broken glass and the wet cat after the fact. Coon Cat
breeders are trying very hard to preserve the breed. There are only a
few licensed breeders in the country and I think they are all in
Maine. If the cat doesn't come from one of these breeders, it isn't a
Maine Coon Cat. The breeders also require that the cats they sell,
around $1000, are neutered, to prevent backyard catteries. The Maine
Coon trait, however, can be found in numerous everyday animal shelter
type cats. Cats with extra toes, a common Coon Cat train, are found
mostly on the eastern seaboard in the US. Very few are found in the
Midwest. When the ships were bringing people and good from Europe a
few hundred years ago, the shippers believed that extra toes meant
extra good at catching mice and rats. So they imported dozens of these
animals with each crossing. And these big foot felines remained where
they were dumped, and flourished on the East coast. Now. Don't you
feel you are a better person for knowing this? Someday, when you least
expect it, someone may ask you, an you will know the answer.

I just annoyed the cat by taking him upstairs to weigh him - around
15Lbs right now (he gets fatter in the summer) - must be the velocity
that he launches himself at people that is the problem....

Anyway having gone off topic a bit too much for the fish folks (although
probably not the cat people).

Tynk - I'll send you a pic of moggy if you like

Cheers

Being a cat person first, a fish person second, I'm
enjoying the topic (off- as it might be for rafm).
I'll also report on-topically/ish that my latest (Dec. 05)
stray finds one of my 20 gallon longs (community
freshwater tank with small fish) an absolutely wonderful
watering hole. The other three cats, who have been with
me five ears, mostly ignore the various fish tanks. The
new stray is small (about 7 lbs) and very very careful
when leaping up onto the tank, so I don't do anything
to try to deter her.

Being a fan of purebreds, although a willing slave to
both purebred and mixed-breed cats, I enjoyed
your report on your favorite breed. BTW my
latest stray, a small tortoiseshell female (now spayed,
like all the cats I've ever been owned by), is the first
cat I've ever had with six toes on both front paws.

Perhaps those extra toes help her balance when
she's drinking from my 20 gallon long? (<--on-topic
comment <g> )

I have one of these, and another that's got a healthy dose of ocicat genes.

They are not like other cats who act like cats, these things... oy oy oy oy.

I'm in the process of setting up a web-site but keep getting distracted
setting up my new tank <g>

I suppose it all depends whether anyone else would be interested in
seeing my moggy which I doubt...of course if anyone does want to see a
picture of a ginger and white cat I'll post it somewhere...

Heehee. You got that right. I enjoyed your web site cat pics, was
wondering if you had an ocelot or bobcat around. The "paws and claws"
images were especially impressive.

Why am I fooling around with these fish tanks when I should be getting
my seedlings for the summer garden going. I haven't even ordered my
seeds yet.

I dunno what they are, just pound cats. Coolest cats I've had this
side of an Abyssinian though.

Maybe we take on-topic/off-topic too seriously? If the subject line doesn't
give it away, then reading a couple of posts would. Animal lovers are
animal lovers eh? Besides, I bet we could come up with a lot of *really*
good fish-cat stories ;~).

So have you got a cat? If not why, not? - lol. I hedge my bets in the
cat/dog war and have one of each...

The cat used to like to watch the fish - but now prefers lounging around
on the sofa acting like a tiger at rest - far less effort for him and
very dignified in a cat-like way - he's learnt he can't catch them -
something about a big bit of glass in the way...bit like not being able
to catch the wildebeast on nature programmes on the tv - lol - although
he did try to get Nemo, Dory and Marlin for quite a while...in fact if I
could manage to watch it again (young daughter with obsessive repetive
film watching habit _ I've seen it a hundred times plus) I bet he would
still go for it...

Critter lovers don't stop with fish or cats. Our place has 3 feline co-
habitants, 1 dog, several aquariums with fish and one 75g turtle tank.

One of the cats barks and sometime acts like a dog. The other two are
typical black cats: aloof and mouthy. Dog is confused. Turtles don't
care.

Yep, unlike most people's cats, mine is very generous. I'm allowed to
feed it, give it water, cut it's nails, brush it, let it out whenever it
wants and let it in whenever it's hanging off the screen window. I feel
so blessed ;~).

Quite true. Far less expensive are the mamalian critters with four
feet.

It took only a few months for my cats to totally destroy the screen in
the window, that new nylon stuff rips pretty easily. So I just removed
the screen and we leave that window open a few inches throughout the
warmer months. The cat window opens onto our kitchen table, which is
somewhat off putting to an occasional dinner guest, but it gives the
cats a fair chance in avoiding the dogs.

Wiliam T Innes said in Exotic Aquarium Fishes "Rabbits are a good
source of natural fertilizer lozenges".

There's a reason you don't hear about this these days though. (Too
much ammonia).

Anybody here keep bearded dragons?

Uh, yeah, about that. Try to find some "pet screen" at better hardware
or glass stores. it will literally hold up to a doberman in heat.

I've done all the cat-reachable windows here over the past few
years and despite trying, nothing, no cat, dog or racoon (vermin)
has ever made one single dent in it. Amazing stuff.

Yes and no. He was working with what he had available to him in his
day and age, both physically and technologically. That's the message I
get when I read him today. And frankly, rabbit pellets well composted
with some carbonaceous ingredients like chopped straw, mixed with some
unadulterated clay cat litter might work well as a sub - substrate
fertilizer if used carefully.

I certainly don't take Innes seriously these days, but I do enjoy
browsing him on occasion, sometimes for a good chuckle, sometimes to
regain a clear perspective on the hobby. I just looked through his old
book the other day and realized that he was probably one of the first,
and still might be the only, fish author who never took himself too
seriously. He didn't lecture. He didn't lay down the law. His writing
is filled with warmth, humour, and practicality, (for the times.) His
humor is as outdated as his methods, but his bottom line message of
doing with what you have and don't have a nervous breakdown if it
doesn't work still rings true.

But if I do that, someone's going to have to get up and let the cats
in and out all day. Laziness is the mother of invention. And I am not
ready, probably will never be ready, to cut a whole in one of my heavy
insulated exterior doors for a little swinging cat door. I can just
see my Newfie with her head outside and her body stuck inside.

What about cat flaps? You can get them with things that go into the
collar so only your cat can open it. Mine has his own door cut into the
main kitchen door and comes and goes as he pleases - well I say that -
sometimes the dog blocks off the entrance.
