View Full Version : Pulsing Xenia

Hello All,
I need to trim up my ever expanding Xenia.
https://home.comcast.net/~kensn/images/xenia2.jpg Has anyone here done this?
What was your method? Were you successful? I have read of securing the Xenia
to a rock with a rubberband and a toothpick, and glueing base to a rock. Was
wondering if either of these has worked for anyone in here?
Thanks for reading,
Ken N.

Try using thread (not too tight). Wrap it around and put a dab of glue on
the bottom of the rock/thread. This is easier than tying a little knot.

Where are you, I'm about to rip a piece off the side of my leather coral?

I had a few pieces growing on the side of a leather coral and plucked two
bits off. Both were then 'wedged' into holes in rocks. One thrived, the
other disappeared (probably down between the rocks). Its also a good idea to
place the smaller bits around many rock fragments, as they grow onto the
bits of rock, they become easier to move, transplant, share without
disrupting the main rockwork of the tank.
Regards
Chris

In the land of rec.aquaria.marine.reefs, the word of the Lord came
to Ken N and verily he spoke saying:

A former poster here gave me a hunk of pulsing xenia. He just cut the
branch off with a razor blade. I used a rubberband to losely secure it
to a rock. It attached firmly within a week but then my butterfly ate
it. My butterfly is gone now if you want to send me a piece ;^)

Because it makes things difficult to understand.
Why shouldn't I top post?

Hey Key, You will notice that Xenia grows like a weed. You can either
use your finger nail to pry a piece off a rock or use a razor blade
and just cut it off as close to the rock as possible. I like to use
my figner nail because i can generally peel it all off and leave
nothing behind. When using a blade if you leave anything still stuck
to the rock it will grow back, no matter how small the piece left
behind is.
If your tank is healthy and your xenia is gowing fine, you really have
to work to kill it.

I have already posted on a local forum for people to come get clippings, or
I would of. I am sure it won't be long before I need to prune againthough
: ).

I second the recommendation for super glue.
Basically, pat dry the live rock you want to attach the Xenia to, and then
dab the end of the Xenia ... put a dab of super glue on each, hold them
together for a few seconds until dry and then put it back in the water.
I've had lousy, lousy luck with colt coral, but the Xenia recovered from the
stress in about an hour and was happy.
