View Full Version : Gold ancistrus breeding!!!

I just saw a couple of my gold ancistrus guarding a dozen eggs or so!!!
:) :) :)
Any suggestions on how to preserve them? I'm thinking of moving the eggs
to a nursery net. Should I do that?
There are too many predators in that tank for the eggs to survive on
their own.

Don't have any specific advice. A nightlight will help the parents
protect the eggs until you can do something. I think they hatch in 9 to
12 days, and then you might even want them separated from the parents, so
that supports moving the eggs before they hatch. However, the newborns
will be feeding on microscopic foods which are in abundance in a tank,
not in a nursery net, and they might need to eat more frequently than you
can artificially manage. Just some ideas, but I've never spawned
ancistrus. Have fun & congrats.

The eggs are gone, they were eaten overnight. :(
Poor dad is still in the same spot, don't know if he noticed they're gone.
Next time I'll move the eggs off as soon as I see any.

Meanwhile, read up on ancistrus and their breeding habits. Add the pvc
tube or blind cave or whatever you need, consider moving the pair to a
tank of their own if the community is too overwhelming for them, you
didn't really tell us about the "community" they are presently living
with. Better luck next time, and next time you'll be more prepared.

Already googled it. :)

Not really practical, since I have lots of loaches in this tank.

I would have to identify the actual pair that mated. I have about 6-7
gold ancistrus and 1 regular brown guy in this tank.

Thanks. It's a 110g heavily planted tank with several species of
loaches, the ancistrus, peruvian angels, ottos, a few surviving feeder
shrimp, and 2 species of rainbowfish. I'm sure the ancistrus have been
spawning for a while, but this time they laid their eggs in a place
where I could see them (on the glass, behind heater and water pump).

Thanks!

Victor

Umm, Umm, Umm . . . you've pretty effectively knocked down each of my
questions. Sounds like a nice tank. The glass wall is not a great spot
to find eggs. I've been able to lift cory eggs successfully from the
glass with a razor blade and raise them in a separate tank, but don't
know about Ancistrus eggs. Too bad you can't find a place for that
perfect sized tube for them to spawn in. And too bad you can't
identify the spawners. Or maybe you will, accidently while viewing the
tank some day. I'm hoping to breed some ancistrus pretty soon, and am
just now beginning to figure out the practicalities of it.

There's plenty of space for the tube, but there are also lots of loaches
that would fit in it and make a meal out of the eggs. :)

I'll be on the lookout and if I see any more eggs (I'm pretty sure the
female was just laying them (spawning them?) when I first saw them,
since I first reported a dozen eggs but before lights out I could count
at least 20) I'll move them to my 20g long tank, where I keep my shrimp.
Or I could just grab a female and put her there, there's already a male
there. Does anybody know if ancistrus are picky about mates like
angelfish are? Or will they spawn first chance they get? ;-)
