The best food IMO would be large cichlid pellets. Add variation by
seeing if he'll eat such things as algae wafers, or shrimp pellets.
Avoid the temptation to feed live food as it makes them more
aggressive and stressed, and viscera in the tank can reduce water
quality.

Feed him a mix of things if you want him to look his best.

I'd suggest using large omnivorous cichlid pellets as a staple, while
mixing in krill, fresh shrimp, and earthworms. Getting him to eat fresh
fruit would be fantastic ... I'd try bit size chunks of pear and banana
first. Just use your imagination. Oscars will usually try just about
anything once.

I would avoid feeding him feeder fish too often; they are not a complete
diet. It's almost the equivalent of eating fast food hamburgers every day.
You might end up with an obese oscar with a poor digestive tract.

45cm? That's almost 18". Koi chow, Trout chow. Purina had a line, which
Mazuri took over. http://www.mazuri.com/ I've never dealt with them, but
that's my recommended approach. Bulk fish-foods for large fish at
economical prices (think no-name Koi or trout chow). Someone has to be
supplying the fish farms in Florida, and I don't think they are using Hikari
or TetraMin ;~).

========================
Businesses that sell farm equipment and farm animal chows sell trout and
catfish chows for around $10 to $12 per 50 lb sack. I don't know why those
who make feeds for large fish such as cichlids, koi and goldfish charge and
arm and two legs for even 1 lb of their feed (about $5 a lb where I live.).

Or lose him the first time he's fed a few DISEASED goldfish. The feeder
fish are always the sickest looking in the stores.

Not the ones we sell, but I still wouldn't recommend using them as a
staple.

Although I am not a big fan of feeding live animals to Oscars, I think
he would really enjoy snacking on trolls. Just the right amount of
crunch. There were a couple around here recently, they're not easy to
catch . . .

Do you mean to say you think they are hiding in the Seine River? How
romantic! (picture of sideways smiley winky goes here.)
