What is an acceptable flow rate for a 40 gal refugium?

Generaly, you want a flow rate that keeps the critters
confortable, and not to strong that they get washed away.
Set up the environment to best suit the critters that you
want to live in the refugium.

I use a 500GPH return pump...
I don't know what that means to you but you ultimately want a nice gentle
breeze
going through the refuge area. It's the baffles that do the trick for flow.
So I guess flow rate
between the baffled area is like stagnate +1 GPH. The water over the
baffles...closer to the top of my refuge
I'm pretty sure is somewhere around the return pump rate of 500 GHP. Oh
yeah my overflow is rated at 700GPH.
Needs to be greater than your return. Hope that help.

make it a slow flow. the idea is to give time for the caulerpa's to absorb
phospates and nitrates. either way, it its moving fast, they are still
absorbing though. remember to cull some algae out periodically to keep the
phosphates and nitrates going into the trashcan.
