I'm just posting this for those that want to see if they recongize anything in
their tank that they do not know by name.

Very helpful, and top notch photos as usual.

I had been trying to id the Digitate hydroids in my tank for a while
now. You say that they can become a problem. How so?

Also, I have the same Stomatella that you have pictured- I've even
seen them spawn recently. Definitely a wierd looking creature.

I've been trying to id another creature I have living in my (shallow)
sand bed. It burrows tunnels through the sand that I can see in the
front, against the glass. It's a shrimp-like or pod-like creature that
seems to stay below the surface. I can see this small thing (the size
of an amphipod, maybe) sifting through the sand grains, all I can make
out are the many legs it uses to sift the sand. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I argued with Dr Ron about this one, trying to come up with a more user-friendly name, but
he wouldn't hear of it. Where did you get the alternate name?

Well, as with most Gonis, it is very hard to keep them in captivity. It has
looked better in the past, and it was in a similar setup for 9 months before I
got it. So I'm not sure what is different. Some days it looks very nice, but
others it is closed up quite a bit.

Maybe my Cleaner Shrimp are the culprits, because they like to wander all over
it looking for food.

It doesn't ring a bell. Are you able to take a picture perhaps? I may have one I can link
you to, for you to compare against.

When doing a search on the Digitate hydroids, I found that some have stated the longer
filaments have stung neighboring corals but I"ve never seen anything bothered by them at
all.

"I argued with Dr Ron about this one, trying to come up with a more user-friendly name,

WHAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTT !!!

From his own dam mouth Marc.

Phyllochaetopterus, is a genus of Chaetopterids.......

Oh the hell with it go put Dr.. Sumuck in his place :-)

http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-05/rs/

"he similarity of the body regions is not the case with the chaetopterids, and at least
one member of this family may be very abundant in reef tanks. This abundant worm is placed
in the genus Phyllochaetopterus. Phyllochaetopterus individuals build a tube out of
"hardened" mucus in which they cement sand grains."

And then drop this on him, tell him I said it :-)

" A chaetopterid worm feeding by extending its two tentacles from its tube. Spionid worms
would look much the same and could not be distinguished without removing the worm from the
tube"

So how the HELL does he know it is a Phyllochaetopterus, a chaetopterid and he says so,
and not one of the Spionid worms ???? ?????????

I ID a worm once on his forum, he said I cant' do that without seeing the head. I said
sure I can, an expert on this type of worm said so. He said, Oh him, he is really good at
that but I still want to see the head.Yah right, I know where Ronny's head is :-)

To prove my point further Marc, you know what Copepods and Amphipods are. Those are often
given as SUBCLASSES, that is above, higher than an ORDER and what do we call them, those
names, correct ? A chaetopterid, is an ORDER, so what is the big deal. If you showed me a
pic of one of your copods, I don say that is Marc it is a Harpacticoida, an ORDER and
these are a couple of Genus : Gammarus or Ceradocus. I would loose you. Just like
Phyllochaetopterus is a Genus.

http://erms.biol.soton.ac.uk/cgi-bin/hierarchy.pl?rank=class&taxon=Polychaeta

Class....Mammalia ( a mammal)
.................Subclass......Placental ( have a placenta)
........................Order.......Carnivore (meat eaters)
.............................Family......Canidae (dog family)
...................................Genus.......Can is ( the dogs and wolfs, not foxes)
..... species .... lupus (Timber Wolf)

None Dave. I have a wall full of invert biology books and dozens of folders on my PC with
hundreds of links to things, just for us on reef tanks or that relate to reef tanks.

"Written by a Mike Noren (spelling) did he not

Yes, Mike Noren was a member of this group and on an occasion visits RC.He has a new job
and recently finally got his Ph.D on Zoological Systematic ( the science on the
classification of animals. He field is worms, especially marine worms.)

Hey, remember this in my post

"I ID a worm once on his forum, he said I cant' do that without seeing the head"
"an expert on this type of worm said so"

That was Mikey :-)
