Heres the setup:
200 gallon tank
4 damsels one butterfly
Eheim 2239 wet/dry filter
two freshwater filters from old tank now being used as powerheads only
ph 8.2, ammonia 0, nitrite .1, nitrate 100!
The nitrate just does not go down! Water changed 3 times but no difference..
Pls helppppp.

if you are using live rock, remove the filters and do water changes.. you
mitrates will drop..
Filters are great for converting ammonia to nitrite, and nitrite to nitrate,
but thats where it stops Nitrates build ( nitrate factory).. the water passing
over the filters is oxygen rich and only capable of colonizing aerobic
bacteria. aerobic bacteria can only convert the ammonia to nitrates.
To get rid of the nitrates, you need anaerobic bactera ( low oxygen) which
takes place deep within your live rock and deep sand bed.
If you run your filters in conjunction with the live rock, the filters (in a
sence) compete against each other and neither ever reach their full potential.

How big the water changes were? How do you condition tap water?
If big water changes do not influence, I would verify if the test
you are using is good. When it is geting old (about 6-10 months
from 1st opening) it might show wrong results... very wrong...
It happened to me once: I read 80mg/l with old test, then the
same water tested 10mg/l with a new, just out of the box test.
Verify test kit testing your friends tank water. Or just buy new
one if yours is more than a couple months old to be on a safe side.
Then, check your tap water source. If you use tap water
(without running it through RO filter) it might have high NO3-
level like 30-40mg/l, so small water changes do not do much...
