View Full Version : Lighting - Corals and Anemones

Hi,

I just added a 96W 50/50 PC light to my tank. I used to run a NO 30W 50/50
bulb. My tank is a 36" 40G tank. What kind of corals and anemones can I have
with just the 96W 50/50 PC? Would I be able to have a larger selection if I
supplemented the 96W 50/50 PC with a 30W 10K NO light? Or would i be better
off getting a 10K PC light and a 30W actinic?

I have had my tank up and running with 60 lbs of live rock with a 3" DSB for
about 9 months. Currently I have a tomatoe clown, cleaner shrimp and a
variety of snails and crabs. I would really like to start adding to my tank,
and would like to start with a host for my clown. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike.

Mike, the more lighting you add, the wider your variety of livestock will be.
If you have room to run the extra NO bulbs, squeeze them in.

When it comes to corals, there are many low light creatures (in the soft coral
family), but if you wanted to try an LPS or SPS then I'd suggest you try a frag
and see how it does.

What are your water parameters, now that it has been 9 months? You might be
able to host an anemone, but you need to have good water first.

Thanks for your reply Marc.

I think my water is good. I am only testing Nitrates and Nitrites and
pH. What else do you recommend that I should test?

Thanks,
Mike

alkalinity, this is one of the most frequently out of whack numbers in
reefs.
Try to stay above 9dKH, this will make your pH swing from night to day
less severe.
Phosphate is another to keep an eye on if you don't run a 'fuge or ATS
style filter.
There are many smaller pretty powerful bulbs out now.
You can buy a 130w fluro bulb for the E40 screw in lamp holder used in
400w MH.
These are great for smaller set ups. The bulbs are a bit dear but the
light is pretty damn intense for a fluro. You can definately get 6500k
and I'm pretty sure 10kk are available too.
The light fitting should be under $10.

On a side note, I have fluffy coralmorphs and my clowns loved them.
They wil grow under your current lighting. These are very similar in
appearence to Ricordia but we don;t get those here in Australia so I;m
not sure if they are a similar species or not.
I;d try some nice fluffy coralmorphs and maybe some ricordia too, for
amenone only a BTA would stand a chance with your light and even then
your pushing crap up hill. Get a MH if you want a host anemone it ive
the best chance, also a good excuse to upgrade to MH.

I would test:

Temp
Salinity
pH
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
Phoshates
Calcium
Alkalinity.

By now, 9 months later, you should have 0 nitrites all the time and can skip that test.

Thanks Simon for the response.

I can't seem to find out anything about fluffy coralmorphs. Is there
another name for them?

Thanks,
Mike.

Thanks Marc,

Any preference to test kits?

Thanks,

When you do your searches spell it "corallimorphs", or "fuzzy mushrooms".

I use Salifert test kits for most of those.
For pH, I use a Pinpoint Meter (tells me the numbers 24 hours a day).
For salinity, a refractometer - love that thing!
For temperature, digital thermometers.

Fluffy, Frilly, Hairy... all names to describe various mushrooms. Here's one:
