I have just started my first marine tank with tap water and a few damsels to
cycle the water. I am thinking of buying an RO unit. Will any RO unit do or
does it have to be one specially for marine use? I was thinking of this one

would this be ok. I am starting of with a fish only system but would like to
buy a few soft corals later on.

Please read this link and look at "Cycling" -

As for RO unit, any RO will be fine that will produce 5ppm or less. It does
not matter about how much product water you get. You can get from your
vendor you mention or from HomeDepot [or similar outlet] or any specialize
vendor sell RO unit or you can even get from Marc -

Anywhere you can get at lowest price.

I bought my RO/DI (Reverse Osmosis & Deionizer) from ebay for $42.00
brand new and yes it works very well. No problems with it whatsoever.
I bought a pump for it too because I have low water pressure. Without
it,I was getting 1.5 gallons an hour, now I get close to 5 gallons an
hour with the pump. If you want to get name brand RO, it will cost
you. Search around and find the best price.

Do NOT get a unit of that configuration. The Cheap carbon filter that it uses
as a prefilter will trash your membrane very quickly. You will wind up paying
for membranes over and over. Those inline carbons are only good for 1500
gallons of dechlorination in most water supplies. That means it is good for
about 8 days of full production.

Get a 3 stage unit (2x 10" cartridges, 1 membrane) at the very least. The 10"
Cartridges are good for 35-7500 gallons each in most tap water. The unit won't
cost much more, but it will save you money in the long run.

No, they don't have to be made for Marine-use only. However, the unit
you linked is not what I would recommend. I'm assuming you are in the
UK area? Try this unit instead:

With a 100gpd unit, you'll be able to produce water more quickly. I
have a 100gpd (I sell them on my site) that makes 5g of water in 65
minutes. With the first unit you picked, it would take 3 times as long
to make the same amount. Sometimes you will not have the luxury of
waiting, trust me. :)
