put into difficult situation.observing fishtock in lfs.newbie asks me on
what i think of sohal tank for his tank.i question newbie & tank not even 1
month old & advise him not to touch as he will lose fish due to ignorance
etc.,etc.,.leave shop & get call from owner of shop next day.get told i lost
him a sale & i should not have given the customer any info about his
stock.what are your views out there.it appears they are not interested in
well being of livestock & not concerned if it is the right fish for the
hobyist.my personal view is not to support this shop anymore, anyone with
what to do in this kinda situation.
only reason i support this lfs is due to him getting in sps corals which the
other shops dont stock out our way.
does 1 keep ones mouth shut when newbies ask you questions in the lfs & the
salesman knows zip????

You did the right thing, the store owner is a DICK! I heard the same thing
At a petco and again at a well known pet store in N.H. Telling a customer
that they could take a tank and all the live stock(marine) and set the tank
up tonight. Anything to get the sale. Brian

you can actually get into real trouble for doing that.

to play a little devils advocate

The LFS might not have "lost the sale" but delayed the sale, you cant know until after it
happens. (even if you have seen it there before from that same person)

though im not saying you are wrong but you coulda been(if the tang was healthy and ammonia
was 0 there is a good chance there would be no problem)

and how you worded the "he will lose the fish due to ignorance" it can all get you into
some trouble.

if you know that there is someone there that you like you can recomend they speak to that
person, otherwise your better off passing the person to anyone that works there. the LFS
owner should not have called you the next morning but clearly there is some relationship
between you and the owner. id recomend talking in person with the owner explain the entire
thing and that you have seen the sales people make mistakes like that sale, and apologize.
you never know you both might learn something from it.

[end devils advocate]

i know it happens ive done it myself a few times, several times ive even been asked by the
sales person advice for a customer in front of the customer, sometimes it works out in the
LFS and my favor(getting the medium for the small price .....) , just because you can get
into trouble doesnt mean you will, and it doesnt make the LFS right ......

It doesn't seem any different to me from telling the obviously
interested woman that she should ignore the sleazy guy who is about to
make a move on her. I think the lfs would have to be worse than simply
unscrupulous to make it compelling to warn the customer.

that wouldn't happen to be the big one on the border where they sell MUCH
more than fish would it? ;-)
