View Full Version : Emerald Crab in a 20G Reef?

I have an emerald crab as part of my cleaner crew. I was wondering if they
are NOT as reef safe as the salesman explained to me. I have noticed a few
empty shells lately and think the emerald may be eating my snails/hermits
and I haven't seen the brittle star in a while. Also, I cought it eating
what appeared to be coraline algae. Should I get rid of the crab and if so,
how do I get it out of the tank? (I also have a CBS and don't want the two
to get caught in the same trap if the emerald is going to eat the CBS)
Thanks in advance.

I kept my Emerald Crab in the Sump to prume down those algae. Emerald Crab
is a good addition as janitoral crew but it really depend on each crab
personality. The smaller [IMO] is better behave until they get bigger.

You can try using a mantis trap or be creative and rig one up, like a soda
bottle etc....

The answer to your question is YES and NO in reef. Do you understand?

All crabs are opportunistic omnivores. IME emeralds will eat algae if they
can get it, but they will eat snails and sometimes small fish if they can't.
They do eat coralline algae, but not enough to be a problem.

You put those in a sump to keep algae down or maybe in a refugium. Depending
your refugium setup.
