View Full Version : Sump Noise

All,

I have a H.O.T overflow I have made a modified Stockman Pipe
(http://www.dursostandpipes.com/) to keep the noise down which has worked
great. But now it is bubling in the sump and making a gurgling noise. I am
looking for ideas to quiet this down or the sump might havc to go as the
tank is in the den where we all watch tv. I got everything just right but
just can't seem to get rid of the noise I am not worried about flooding as I
have cut the power to my pump a number of times and it works great and the
overflow stays primed the whole time. I have plumbed everything with PVC
maybe I need to use soft flexable on the drain?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

another option is to have the drain line going into the side of a "T" ,.. one
end of the T will have pipe that goes down and the other end goes up with a
stand pipe/air vent. The water will flow down to the sump and the bubbles will
escape through the standpipe/airvent.

Ok, I set up a new 75 gallon with sump in January and went insane for a
couple weeks trying to quiet the return (one problem was that on forums
people always assumed the standpipe/drain in the main tank was making the
noise, not the SUMP outlet of the drain hose which I presume is your
problem.)

Forget all the slit and hole cutting and elaborate T piping and such in the
sump...I tried all of that forever and none of it made a whit of difference.

I do use black vinyl for my plumbing, not PVC, and my return pump is a Mag
7, so your mileage may vary.

The key is to REDUCE THE SIZE of your drain hose. I did it and my burping
problems were solved. If your drain hose is much bigger than the volume of
water going through it you'll end up burping.

Then on the end of my drain hose I have an L-shaped barb fitting that I have
submerged and rotated till I reduced the last noise to almost nothing by
rotating it to get just the right flow direction.

I would cut the slits in a horizontal piece of PVC that will fit inside your
sump *at the water's surface*.

No problem.

I think the reverse Durso is a good idea and I am going to try this on the tank I am setting up.

I think that that is what this thread is about, just using the returns as a
safety device when restricting the standpipe.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=344892

I think I might give this a try. I saw it some time ago, but didn't
consider it because restricting my returns didn't sound like a good idea.
But I have my tank positioned 5" from the wall to make way for a Wave2K, so
I may as well run my returns up the behind the tank and use my in tank
returns as extra standpipes.
