View Full Version : hazy tank glass

hi all,

i've been trying to clean my glass fish tank.

it gets those hard green algae growing on the glass.. so I've been
scraping them off periodically using either the mag-float or a plastic
scraper, and lots of scrubbing. However, even when all the green stuff
is off, they seem to leave a white hazy footprint where they existed.

few days ago, I decided I'm sick of seeing these haze (the water is
crystal clear.. but it doesn't look clear thanks to the tank haze). so
I started scraping them off using a razor blade. most of them seem to
come off with the razor (you can see white stuff sort of being "planed"
off by the blade), but there *still* is some film on it that leaves a
hazy streak inside the tank even if the razor no longer produces any
scrapings.

also, during water changes, when the water level goes down, you can
REALLY see the haze on the glass as the water dries from it. so
something is on it. i just don't know what it is.

anyone have any suggestion how to get rid of them? this is purely for
aesthetics reasons, but it would be nice to see and show off my clear
water tank for a change..

===================
Try using one of those algae pads to remove the algae instead of a razor
blade and see if that helps. I use them and there's nothing left behind, no
haze when the algae is scrubbed off.

I have the same problem. I have extremely hard water and am thinking it is
perhaps from hard water leaving the film or is it possible that something
etched the glass? A medication perhaps? I have used a razor, the magnetic
glass cleaner, a nylon scrubber and nothing helps. I can see where the fish
have sucked on the glass and left squiggle marks across the glass.
I am thinking I will have to drain the tank and get a hard water remover and
clean the glass. Which is no small job. The fish will have to be moved
temporarily with a large amount of the tank water to avoid having to recycle
the tank, which is 55 gallons.
Has anyone else had this problem and knows how to fix it?

Terri

I have hard water and see the same stuff. What I do is lower the water
level (as part of the weekly water change) and then use an algae scrub
pad rinsing into the tank water...then top up again...works a treat for
me...

What I use is (very warm but not hot) vinegar. It dissolves hard water stains
instantly. Some drips into the tank, not harmful at all.
