Looking for Apistogramma Agassizii. Saw in DC area shop recently for
20$ EACH!! I think not. There HAS to be better than that! (Still in
the DC area)
Any ideas folks?

LiveAquaria.com has "assorted" Apistos for 7.99 - but doesn't look
like you get to choose.

You usually get what you pay for when it comes to apistos. Any cheaper
than that and you'll probably be picking from a group of inbred unsexable
juveniles, some with bent spines. I've seen them at work for as cheap as
$7 retail, but they were puny and far to young to sex.
The place I got my agassizii from was asking CND$50 each for mature males
and females, but I got them for about half that. They are gorgeous
specimens and started breading within two hours of placing them in my tank.

I remember when I was [much] younger and all suggestions were to start
with 6 or so healthy juveniles, raise them and pair off naturally.
that was the part that was almost as good as breeding them. The
natural process.
As long as they're healthy!

What morph? The original wild types are basically red or blue forms,
the blue being the most common. There are tank bred color morphs
as well these days whhc command a fairly high price.
The Czech republic breeding cooperatives crank these things out
like crazy, try to find a store that orders from them. I know
the Menagerie in Toronto does.
They show up on Aquabid fairly often but not so much in cold months
and it's very very cold hre at least right now. -26C.
Look them up in google
apistoggramma agassizi price
wuld be what I could use.

That's when you buy them all :-)

They do that quite often. The spring rains in the Amazon trigger themso any change
into clean fresh water usually does it. Oddly they're the only fish that
lays bright cherry red eggs.
Here's a pair I had that spawned as soon as I put them in a tank
upon getting them home.

These are the res form. The blue has blue in the tail not red.
I make no apologies for the psychadelic gravel. I got it and
the 15 gal tank for $3 in a yard sale (and threw away the
tacky plastic plants)
