Just wondering if anyone here has had experience with Hagen Phospahte Test
kits, and if they have an answer to this problem.
A friend and I each have a Hagen Phosphate PO4 test kit, his is included
with the Briefcase test kit bundle they offer and mine is just the PO4 kit
on its own, Both have different instructions on how to use the 3rd reagent
bottle.
Mine says to use 3 drops and his says to use 1 drop, these give vast
differences depening which you choose... 3 drops shows as PO4 to be very
low, 1 drop says PO4 is present in a big way.
We have contacted Hagen via email and have been asked the lot number of the
bottles, We have not heard from them since.

It makes it hard to rely on a test and its results when there are two
written sets of instructions which both give different end results.
Has anyone dealt with this problem before and have a solution??

Thanks in advance.

The cardboard cutout for Hagen Brief Case kits has errors.
Your friend needs to go by what is in the book.

Cool, thanks.....
Using the book, I am in the clear.
Using the Briefcase method, everything you sample has high Phosphates...

My friend (who also posts here) says the instructions he has are in a
booklet form the same as mine, but his is printed differently...
I take it the card you mention would not be the book that he has...

I have the Hagen Briefcase kit,
The Cardboard cutout that goes inside the lid has regent 3 mis-printed.
I wrote over mine with a marker so I will not make a mistake.

Apparently they switched regent 3 from a regular dropper bottle like the
others to a flat top glass bottle. It only takes 1 drop from the flat top
glass bottle. The instructions from my phosphate kit state:
"Add 1 drop of Regent #3 to the test tube (simply invert the glass bottle
and the product will self dispense within 3 to 5 seconds)..."

The cardboard cutout with my kit had 3-3-3 printed for the phosphate test.
What type of bottle does your regent 3 come in? That is probably why they
wanted your lot numbers.

My 3rd bottle is the Glass type with the flat top.
Says to use 3x3x3 drops....
I'm sure my friends is the same as mine but his briefcase instructions are
in booklet form (not card), the same booklet as mine except his reads 3x3x1
drops...

How does your water test in his?

It is obvious that they made a change to regent 3 at some point. Perhaps
yours is the old style?
Perhaps its just time for a new kit and not have to worry about it...

Mine is a glass bottle, and the book says 3x3x1, the test result using 1
drop reads almost the top of the scale, using 3 drops the test is below the
first reading on the scale.

It's ****ed off realy bad after spending a fortune on phosphate remover of
all types and brands only to find the HAGEN test kit was at fault. And not
to forget a total of 4 complete water changes on the tank.

Haven't tested his with mine etc but we have bot tested the NSW we use for
water changes, we both use the SAME water, we collect it at the same time...
The tests of this same water is radically different when tested with his kit
and mine.
My kit is a single kit and was purchased many months after he bought his
Briefcase kit..
So in theory, mine is newer.... I have also checked other single kits and
they all say the same as mine, and all the Briefcase kits this way say 3x3x1
drops....
Both can NOT possibly be correct, the Reagent #3 is the same in both kits,
If i use 1 drop of my 3rd bottle as his kit says to, then I get the same
results as he gets.
If He uses 3 drops of his 3rd bottle as my kit says to do then he gets the
same results as i get..
Which to me says the 3rd bottle is the same, just different
instructions.....
By the way, Skozzy is the friend with the briefcase kit...

Cheers

I think the only way you two will solve this question is to get some water
tested by another person. My kit is the 3x3x1 and my phosphates are always
undetectable. Do you have a LFS that you could take a sample to and have
tested for free or for a small fee?

Your theory is that using 1 drop of regent 3 in water that has no phosphates
causes it to read high. If that were the case, I should see the same thing
here.

Yes I think you are right, I'll have to take a sample to one of our LFS and
get them to test it.
In theory yours would be correct, But if there's a difference in paperwork
between kits over here in Australia then there just may as well also be a
difference in bottles btween yours and ours here where we are....That's why
i wish Hagen would respond, but their last reply was a EMPTY email....
Thanks for all your replies...

I would think that adding insufficient drops will cause the test to
read LOWER - aren't you adding insufficient indicator for the possible
amount of PO4?

Either way - you both might have correct kits and this could be an
export issue.
The old Hagen kits that we (Canada) saw were 3x3x3, with all 3 bottles
as plastic. They switched to the glass droppers because reagent #3
was reacting with the plastic in the bottle and making the test
unusable.
For our briefcase/Master test kit, as well as the boxed ones, it has
always been 3x3x3.

However, since you're in Oz I thought I'd mention something that might
help. Ever noticed how the stupid Hagen NO2/3 test kits come with a
large bottle #1 and a small bottle #2? And yet you need the same
amount of drops for every test? I asked our Hagen rep about it and he
said it wasn't a money grab (if it were, they wouldn't sell individual
bottles to replace used up ones), but a legal issue. Within Canada,
anyways, there is some law about chemical densities and how much can
be shipped without extra security (or somesuch - he was no expert but
that was what head office told him when they launched the lines).
It's possible that Australia had different laws and so Hagen was able
to package the third reagent at a higher concentration - so you only
need one drop to get the same amount of dissolved reagent. Then,
perhaps, Hagen decided it would be easier to simply produce all the
stuff in China (they've started doing that now) and are importing the
same stuff the rest of the world gets.
Or on the other hand, maybe someone made a SERIOUS typo and the
reagents were the same.

My suggesion? Don't buy a Hagen test kit. :) I've moved to Aquarium
Pharmaceuticals tests and so far I love 'em.

If we put our test kits side by side (which we have done), the results are
like this:

Skozzy: (po4 Test comes from the Master Test Kit)
3x3x1 - Final reading is very high phosphates
3x3x3 - Final reading is very low phosphates
The booklet says to use the 3x3x1 method.

Microbot: (po4 Test comes from a stand alone test kit)
3x3x1 - Final reading is very high phosphates
3x3x3 - Final reading is very low phosphates
The booklet says to use the 3x3x3 method.

The more of reagent #3 used the lower 'OR' more acurate the test.

So, looking at the above, the Master Test Kit and the Single Test Kit
produce the same results, the only difference is the booklet.

But for me it has cost a lot of extra money, because I have been doing more
frequent tests to monitor it all and always seeing high phosphates, I ended
up buying phosphate removers, each payday I would buy anything that claimed
it would remove phosphate, the average cost of each remover was around
$40aus, so far i have bought enough 'remover' to completely replace every
drop of salt water in my tank and then some.

I agree with Rikko, I will start looking at alternatives to Hagen Test
kits...
