What I mean by Target Filter is a tank designed for removing one problem and
not a general overall filter.

I have on occasions problems with phosphates building up, so I was thinking
of making a filter to 'Target' phosphates. The question is, what would I
make and where in-line of the water flow would it go.?

The next Target Filter would be Nitrates, where inline would it go and what
would it be made up of. ?

Culupra, will consume the phosphate issue. do a search on it.

Nitrates : I dont think you will get a good anwser on this. water changes ..

Actually any type of a vegetative filter will work on phosphates and
nitrates both. Now a vegetative filter is not a quick filter that you
could just hook up and remove when needed you would need it going all of
the time.

Other filters, for phosphate, I would suggest any type of a canister
filter filled with phosphate removing media, turn it on when needed as
for where to place it, I would connect it via the sump if you have one
to to keep the tank looking better. AS for a nitrate filter there is
not a lot you can do other than a nitrate reducing anaerobic filter,
which is normally made with a coil of hose. It takes a few days to
weeks to get setup and working though.

My suggestion for you would be to go with the vegetative filter (ie
refugium) and grow some type of algae in the filter either Calurpa or
Cheatomorpha or Ogo or ????

Humm..... I am not sure what you trying to get at. I understand you want to
remove specific nutrient [Phosphate / Nitrate]. The only general answer is
to remove certain nutrient at it source.

Phosphate -
If phosphate coming from fresh mix - Then Check what what mix is including.
Or if it from the source water, use RO or RODI to remove from that source.
But if it phosphate from food, check what ingredient that come with that may
have phosphate. ..... Etc ....

Nitrate -
Nitrate is a by-product of Nitrite that was broken down by mean of bacteria.
It also from food / poop / decay - etc... You can not really remove the
source since it a by-product of something before it. The only option is to
reduce it by mean of other thing like PS / Algae / LS - etc ... So if you do
not want nitrate, you can target by not feeding food or have inhabitant to
your tank. Simply do not have any inhabitant that will or can produce
nitrate or by-product of something before to get nitrate. Simply have a
empty tank.
