View Full Version : nano reef live sand amount

I have an eclipse system 6 that I am looking to turn into a nano with some
shrooms and a few small pieces of rock and what ever else happens to grow.
I wanted to put a live sand base, how many pound should I get for a tank
that size?
Also, what are the odds a false perc would survive in there, or a shrimp, in
such a small volume? Dwarf seahorse? I'd like something other than just
the rock and shrooms. I am going to remove the light and retro in 2X13w PC
lighting kit. (from ahsupply) unless anyone knows a preconfigured solution.
thanks

ok

its a tall tank dsbs in nano's are kinda no no's so bout 4lbs of good life sand will do.
the weight of the LR will depend more on the orgin than on a larger tank but id say 6 to
start then watever comes with your shrooms.

which shrimp?

40% with new LR, 90% with specially selected and cured LR, 100% with no LR for 10 ish
seahorses

Hmmmm, 6 gallon, maybe 6-10 lbs? should be between 1-2 inches? But
that would be is you were going for live sand bed in the nano,
biologicial filtration is always more efficient then artifical.
As for things for a nanon I would maybe go with a small shrimp or
crab, something hardy maybe something from the genus Lysmata? Or a
smaller novel hermit? Maybe a small arrow crab, course you will have
to move him if he gets too big and you will have to keep an arrow
feed. The idea is something that isn't going to have a large bioload
on the nano (unless you want to do more frequent water changes?).
I would recommend reading the April/May 20004 issue of CORAL magazine,
had some neat stuff on nanos.

Scarlet Cleaners or camel/peppermint shrimp

Was thinking if I went with seahorses of using branch rock which should give
them more places to hitch no?

coral magazine? I have never seen or heard of it. Got a link to a page on
it? Love to take a look. Only mag I get is FAMA and only some of it is
useful but I've been getting it for many years now.
thanks!
Hadn't thought about the arrow crab....not a bad idea, but not sure I want
the danger of it growning too big. On the shrimp, I suppose I'd have to
supplement for their molting requirements (iodine is it?)
Thanks for the ideas though.
