Hi;
I am building/upgrading my hood to take a 250w Metal Halide. The T8s
currently in it are about 4" from the water's surface, protected from
splashes by a glass cover.
Realistically, how far from the surface should the MH be? Will it affect
the plastic hinges of the glass? The tank is 48w x 22t.
I'd like to keep the glass to protect the bulb.
Thanks,
Dan

Dan, you don't need the glass any more. It will trap heat and your tank will
get too hot with MH. Plus it inhibits oxygenation of the water.
The MH needs to be 9" to 12" off the water. Put a fan or two in your canopy
while you are remodelling. Trust me, it made a huge difference. I put my fans
in the top of the canopy, blowing down onto the water, and my tank doesn't go
over 82F ever. With the extra fan over my sump during the daytime, the tank
stays right around 80F.

Thanks again, Marc! I'll bend up a canopy addition today at work.

Thus the need for it to be 9" off the water, and a cooling fan in the canopy. ;)
