Hi all! I've read that lighting for an aquarium should be on 10-12 hours a
day. During hours that lights are off, do you guys have the actininc blue
on, is the tank in total darkness? New to this hobby obviously. Any help
would be appreciated.

All lights are off for 12 hours- the actinics usually come on earlier than
the regular, and stay on a bit longer to simulate dusk and dawn.
During the dark hours some ambient light in the room is ok (just like
moonlight) but not enough to keep them awake.
IMO as usual.

It is a good idea to have some light, especially if you have an anemone in
the tank. I just have a small nightlight in the room, but there are small
LEDs called "moonlights" for this purpose.

would the $6 rope lighting from home depot be good to put as a night light?
they're very dim and produce a blue light. tia.

You could do that. Some have. Here's what I did recently:

I would think to be totally natural, the "moonlights" would need to move in
28 day phases.
