View Full Version : sump pump for 55gal w/ SCWD?

Hi Folks;
I'm able to setup a sump on my undrilled 55gal tank. I have a Mag7 pump, no
other sump equipment. I was talking with the folks at Lifereef about using
their Slimline overflow box (I only have 3.5" of space behind the tank), and
mentioned that I might use a SCWD on the return. They recommended a Mag9
instead as they had heard that SCWDs cut back on the water flow.
What do others think ... experiences? Any idea what kind of gph I might get
with a Mag9 and a SCWD?
Thanks in advance.

Oops, that should read "ABOUT to setup." I should learn never to post
before having my first shot of caffeine in the A.M. Thanks.

Not sure about gph using a Mag 9 or Mag 7, but I am using a Mag 18 on my
65-gallon with a SCWD hooked up to it (about 4' of head) and it works well.
I would use at least a Mag 9 or Maybe even a Mag 12 as you can always
throttle it back with a ball valve in the return line if needed. Better to
buy more pump now than to have to buy a bigger one later.

Almost exactly the setup I am currently running. I had a Mag7 and added an
SCWD. There was too little flow, so I changed to a Mag 9.5. It is much
better, but I think a Mag12 might be too much. The plumbing has started
making snorting noises which it didn't do with the Mag7 with or without the
SCWD.
The Mag 9.5 might not seem like that much of an increase over a 7, but if
you look at the flow charts, the 7 is only 60 percent of the flow of a 9.5
at 4' head. Supposedly the SCWD cuts flow by 20% so a 12 would be 900 GPH
less whatever your plumbing loss is.
I would guess your overflow is good for 600 GPH, so buy a gate valve if you
get a 12, just in case.

All good comments. I've had my SCWD on a closed loop with a
Mag 5 and a Mag 7 on my 29g reef for some time now.
