View Full Version : Refugium Cycle Time

Just finished putting together my refugium for my 100 gallon tank. I
wanted to know how long it usually takes for the nitrates to go down.
I am using Chaetomorpha and Miracle Mud for substrate. It is a 30
gallon tank that I converted into a refugium. Thanks

Cycling any tank is varies. It depend on size area and the amount of
nutrient the water contain. Give it time and use a reliable test kit to
answer your question of regarding *when it time*.

Hi:
I would be interested in hearing about your results. I have heard mixed
results on the miracle mud. How much did you put in. I run a 135 gal with
a 40 gal refugium with a skimmer using calerpa prolifera. My nitrates stay
around 10 with lots of coral, considerable live rock and a few fish. How
quickly they will go down depends on your load expecially fish. How long do
you leave the light on refugium?

Wayne,
Is it safe to say that a reading of 10ppm for Nitrates is good? I've
been battling getting them below 10ppm. I've just introduced 10
12inch mangrove plants into my 100gallong tank.
thank,
Oc

Mangroves are very slow growing, they will help a little but your
wasting a lot of light on them that could be used for much more
efficient plants like algae.
You need hundreds of mangroves to do the same amount of nutrient uptake
as a few square feet of micro algae.
10ppm is not bad but under 1ppm is preferred by a lot of corals.

10ppm is not too good but not bad either. 10ppm will promote algae. Are
those algae cover on a rock, if so, relocate that rock to your sump and see
if it spread. You can clean the rest in your main tank by manual labor or
use some janitoral crew like shrimp / crab etc... and even tang is you have
it. My Tang graze on algae.
