I inherited an Eheim 1250 pump with my tank, and over the weekend I set this
up as an external pump to use with a SCWD I purchased. I was a little
surprised at the vibration noise, especially after reading the webpages on
this pump and how it's supposed to be quiet ..
Does anyone else have this pump? Are there tricks to quiet the vibration
noise?
Or, should I just go and buy a more quieter pump?
Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated!

Make sure there is no air in it.

I use an Eheim 1250 with my UV sterilizer. It is essentially inaudible. (You
have to move your head to within a foot of the pump or so to hear it at all.)
My pump is sitting on a solid floor (concrete with parquetry), so there is
no way for the floor to resonate. If you have yours in a shelf or similar,
it may be that the surface your pump is on acts as a resonator and
amplifies the hum. In that case, I'd try sitting the pump on a big block
of soft foam (such as is used for seat cushions). If the pump is noisy
even if it's not resting on anything (hold it in your hand while it is running
to try this out), there is something wrong with it. As far as I know, the
only serviceable part is the impeller. You could try and replace that --
if the impeller shaft has gone slightly out of true, that would cause a
lot of extra vibration.
Cheers,
Michi.

Thanks for the responses!! I took the pump apart and found that the plastic
shaft was actually broken - the pump still worked, but I'm assuming that the
moving parts were hitting the chamber. Doh!
I could only find replacement parts for the 1250 on Eheim's webpage - if
anyone knows other places, please let me know.
Thanks again!!
