View Full Version : MH Distance from water...

June 21st 04, 05:14 AM
I am in the proccess of constructing a canopy for my 75gal reef so I can add
my MH bulbs.
Due to a mis calculation, my lights are going to be 8 to 9 inches from the
surface of the water.
The bulbs are 400watt Blueline 10000k + and I will be running two of them.
I know I should be more like 10 to 12 inches from the water but is 8 to 9
going to be okay or should I start over with my canopy?
TIA

Sounds too close to me unless you can keep the water cool. If you were going
to mount the lights via the chains or wires that most have then shorten
them, if you had ideas of screwing them to the hood then you might want to
rethink the hood. If you need a few more inches and depending on how you
designed it there shouldn't be any reason why you couldn't add some hight
with extensions, then cover them with the same material you using to face it
up.

8-9"will be OK. That is the mark that I usually aim for. IMO 12" is too high.

That'll be fine. My bulbs are 9" off the water, and I have fans I
installed in the canopy to cool the hot air in there. They blow
straight down onto the water, forcing cool air into the canopy and push
the hot air out the back (and front, when open).

Depending on the tank I have 400 watt bulbs anywere from 4 inches off of
the water to about 10 max. Unless you need the spread to light the hole
tank, why would you want to mount the lights so high off of the water.
The amount of light decreases with the square of the distance from the bulb.

If you run into to many heat problems you might want to get a chiller.
www.captivereefs.com has their new inline 1/5 hp chiller for $200. Best
price I have ever seen on chillers.

Actually eric that is a very good price for a 1/5 HP chiller. Champion
lighting wants $349.95 for their 1/5 HP chiller, and that is a special
sale. Give me a few pszemol and I'll hook you up.

Are they defective or something? ;-)
It should be enough for my 30 gallons.
For this price I might get two of them, the second for my 10g DSB :-)

A few of what ... do I have to give you to hook me up? :-)))
I am puzzled again... My English is still not good enought for r.a.m.r. ;-(

I am curious as well. I looked at their chiller section and the cheapest
1/5th I saw was over $600.00

I saw a guy do this. Purchase a cooler [I believed it a soda or wine
cooler], drill or DIY a hole through this cooler. The tube is a PVC [I
believed it a 1"] that draw water from a SCWD. The cooler is set to cold.
This setup are set with a Sump + Cooler + SCWD. In the sump have a heater to
regulate the temperature to his preset degree. The cooler is a Sanyo that
was purchase in Fry's Electronic for about $99USD.
The cooler have multi-purpose.
1. cool the tank water.
2. cool is beverage.
Tank - Sump - SCWD > [PVC pip] > Cooler > [PVC pipe] > SCWD - Sump - Tank.
BTW, this tread seem to be off-topic regarding MH

What is the cooling capacity of this cooler?
What are the heat losses on the PVC pipe?
Does it make any sense to do it? I doubt it.
I would much more prefer a regular chiller for
$200 than a home made solution for 100 with no
guarantee it will lower the temp even for 1'C.

I do not remember the capacity of that cooler or the exact model. I just
know or believe it Sanyo [by memory]. The only thing I can best describe is
it a small cooler or personal cooler that you put your soda / beverage /
wine in.
PVC pipe heat lost or how much it bring down the temperature I trully do not
know. I just see this setup by accident when I went with a friend. The
heater regulate the temperature to preset temperature as I was told. He did
not mention what was the temp that need to be lower but his current temp
that I was there, was set to 79`F [IIRC]. BTW, he have 3 heater in his sump
that I forgot to mention. 1 heater was on when I was there.

That was my point. $200 is too low for a 1/5 HP chiller, unless it's
used or there's something wrong with it.

Cost is relative I guess.... This might be cheap to setup, but I would
think the energy costs would be much higher than a normal chiller,
especially if one has to use a heater because the cooler is too effective.
BTW... Replace the word "cooler" with "cube refrigerator" or
"dorm-sized refrigerator" and I've seen this done too.
