Anyone know where I can pick up some Pickling Lime in Denver? I've
tried 6 different stores that I thought I'd seen it at before but
couldnt find it. It may be that its just out of season though. I had
my dad call the grocery in WY and they told him they only carried it
in the canning season.
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt
Do you have any Super WalMart's?
They carry it year round!
Most chain stores, except Kroger, have it in their main warehouse and
can have it brought to your local store on the next trip if you talk
to the manager and request it.
Hate to knock Kroger, but they have NEVER had their act together
regarding anything. I can understand local stores running out of
stock, but Krogers main distribution warehouses are ALWAYS out of
common everyday items so they cannot even fill their own chains
requests in a timely fashion. It's amazing that chain is even still
in business.

It's Calcium Hydroxide - Kalkwasser.
The last time I looked at it in a LFS it was approx $10 for 250 gr. If
buy Pickling Lime at the grocer it's $2.00 for 454 gr....

Gary,
I checked a Super Walmart here and they didnt have it. They had
pickling mixes but no Pickling Lime.
I think I'm going to just order it from canningpantry.com. Hopefully
shipping wont be to much...
Thanks,
Matt

Indeed, they also call it Slaked Lime over, maybe a search on that may yield
better results!

You could always try one of those old fashioned hardware stores with the
wooden floors & antiques and the owner knows everything about every product
in the store. Besides they are fun to look around

Hi Matt
My cousin lives in Colorado Springs and has 2 very nice reef aquaria.
I have no idea of how close that is to Denver, but he said that ALL of
the King Soopers carry pickling lime usually Ball brand. Eon market
has Mrs. Winners brand and get this, even the Conoco Station on Union
carries pickling lime year round. Of course, the owner also has a
reef aquarium in the station.
If King Soopers are in Denver, give them a try!

I went to canningpantry.com and started an order and shipping was
$8.63 so the savings are greatly diminished. I have been to several
King Soopers and went to True Value which I'm sure I'd seen it at
before, but it was not there.
I'll either have to keep looking all over town or break down and pay
double or more for Kalkwasser at the LFS.

I have been using builder lim ethat I get form the local hardware store,
it's very cheap, cheaper than picling lime. I paid about $7 AU for a
20kg (44pound) bag. Many years supply. I have not seen any problem
caused by contaminants.
Home Depot or something like that would some.
