best 'cover' for aquarium

Hi folks,
We're just setting up our new salt water aquarium. I've been reading
that it's better not to use a glass cover (which came with our tank),
however, I'm afraid that I might have issues with jumping fish,
'fishing cats' and cat hair in general inside the aquarium. I've been
reading about using eggcrate as a cover, but I'm not convinced that it
will be effective against cat hair. My girlfriend is also not
terribly convinced that eggcrate (black or even silver) will look nice
on top of the aquarium.

So, I'm wondering what other solutions you folks have been using out
there. Suggestions very much appreciated!

What surround the top of the tank? Do your tank have a canopy or some sort
of cover surrounding it? Assumed you have a canopy or similar, does it have
a ventilation or some sort or similar? If so, use a sponge or some coarse to
filter out the vent that the air is pulling / sucking into the canopy.

Alternative:
Shave the fur and use kitty cloth?
Which pet is more important or enjoy more? Cat or Fish? Decide which one you
want to keep and the other will be either remove or keep else-where like in
a garage [J/K].

Seriously, using the sponge or some filter pad on the vent should do the
trick. The filter media should be remove or clean regularly.

Regarding about looking nice? Again, if you have canopy or some sort of
cover over the tank, you do not see the eggcrate. So, there no way it look
ugly behind those cover. Unless your girlfriend have X-Ray vision like
"SuperGirl" that can see through thing. If can, please tell me so I will
prepare to wear a lead underwear for protection or use kyptonite liner.

i have 4 cats, 2 of which shed heavily. i don't have a cover on my reef, and
never see any cat hair in the tank.

Normally cat-hair will fall to the ground or where the cat land or area that
it been. The only time I notice cat-hair is when there a fan that blow
air-circulation about the room when hair travel.

Reef types believe that the glass cuts down on the intensity of their light.
If you are running a fish only tank then just use the glass.

Heat and the lack of evaporation is the major point with reefs
and glass covers....... not the light getting thorough....

As others have mentioned, cat hair shouldn't be a problem. As for keeping
the cat itself out of the tank - how about a wood canopy? That's what I use
to keep my cat out.

If you're concerned about the cat getting on top of the canopy and hair
falling through and into the tank - get a battery-operated scat mat (gives a
harmless but annoying static charge when the animal touches it) and lay it
across the canopy.
You won't need to keep it there long ... one "lesson" should be enough for
the cat.

If anyone's around the house, a hand sprayer or squirt gun used every time
the cat approaches the tank might help. Or put the cat in the garage when
you're not there.
