I am interested in buying or making a custom hood to convert my
open-top 29 gal. tank into a reef tank. If you make hoods, or can
offer advice on how to do this, please let me know. Post a reply
here, or email me at:

Generally, I'm willing to buy one from you, unless I can make it
myself for less expense (which includes time and learning).
THANKS!!!!

John,
Here is the one I made for my 29g. Maybe you can copy it?

Marc,
That is a fine job you have made !! Judging by the equipment you make,
you are a very "handy" person. I am scared of attempting most jobs.
LOL.
The only queries I have are :
1) How much condensation forms on the inside of the canopy ? Do you
ever have concerns about water getting into the lighting fixtures ?
2) The hinges rust over time. Are there any possible pollution
problems arising from water drips from the metal ?

Well, the hinge is old now. I probably could have just put it on top,
since it is about eye level or slightly above it. That would reduce the
chance of it getting wet. However, my plan is to just replace it with
a new hinge in the near future. Why wait until it just snaps in half?
Condensation is a real issue. I never did incorporate any type of
cooling/venting fans. Never wanted to. In the winter, the canopy gets
wet inside, and water forms on the lightbulbs and sockets. I spent many
mornings wiping everything down. It even arched a couple of times in
the past 3 years, but I dealt with it.
Leaving the canopy slightly open is a good alternative if no fans are
utilized. :)

No, not a single explosion.
About a year ago, I was walking past my tank around 3 a.m. and could
hear splashing water. Fearing that my tank was overflowing, I started
checking everything. Not a drop of water anywhere.... So I opened my
canopy, and saw the powerhead to the Aqua C Remora had burst loose and
was shooting water right into the PC sockets!!!!!
I spent a good hour drying that all out, and prayed at 10 a.m. when the
lights turned back on that they would stay on and not short out
permanently. I must have done a good job, because they still work to
this day. :)
