View Full Version : Plant type in refugium
Guys,
Being a newbee, I've been lurking in here and absorbing as much
knowldge as possible so for.
I was wondering, in my battle to rid my tank of the current 10ppm
Nitrates, if converting my Amiracle Maxireef 200 w/d filter to a sump
with LR and plants would assist me in getting control of the Nitrates.
I am considering either dumping the w/d filter and building/purchasing
a nice size sump, or converting my w/d to a sump. The question is,
what types of plants, if any, would I place in the sump? I've read
and seen Marc's page on sumps, which points out LR in the sump, but
didn't see much about plants.
thanks in advance,
Oc

Some nice macro algae or a tray for some micro algae to grow on would
work fine.
Your idea is a good one and your tank will be better for it.
Some light is required over the sump if you are to grow nice algae,
something like a cheapo 250w halide or some other type of HID lighting,
you don't need aquarium based bulbs just hydroponic grow lights so this
cut's the cost by a large amount. There is also a lot of hydroponic gear
for sale second hand if your that way inclined.

When you remove and convert your W/D to sump, nitrate should normally
decrease. Add light to promote algae growth in the sump.

I use Cheatomorpha.
http://melevsreef.com/id/cheato.html
And this 19w bulb will do the job, for a total of $15 with the clamping
light socket:

Thanks for the info. Here is my current dilema:
I have about 25 pounds of live rock in my tank and my w/d filter. I
hope to begin building my sump/refugium this weekend, at which time I
will populate the sump with live sand. The problem is I don't have
the funds to go out and get 100 pounds of new live rock. The question
here is, can I remove the current w/d, install my sump with live sand,
and place some Cheatomorpha in the refugium side without having my
A/N/N go way up? If so, done deal, if not, i have to wait another few
months to install the refugium.
thanks,
Oc

Marc,
Thanks for the info. The Cheatomorpha is next on my acquisition list.
BTW, did you get the email I sent you regarding my sump design? It
would have come from my work account.

Just use the same water from the main tank to your sump should be no
problem.
Moving your LS to your sump should fine and may spike a bit. But should be
back to normal if there no die-off during the transport.
