Hi folks;
Newbie here who's been fighting the good fight against green algae ... I
think I'm winning ... more of my live rock is exposed to the light and
interesting creatures (to me anyway) are showing up. Can anybody ID the
following:
http://www.geocities.com/dc2772/IMG_0045.jpg (something tells me someone's
going to say "it's the dreaded aipstasia anemone and all is doomed")
http://www.geocities.com/dc2772/IMG_0046.jpg (green globular things with
hollow tubes projecting ... sponges?)
I love this hobby.

#1 looks like a filter feeding featherduster. Benign.
#2 is definitely in the sponge family, and benign.
Check out my ID page to see what an aptasia looks like:

Are you sure about that Marc, looks like a Ascidian/ Tunicate/Sea Squirt to me with that
long tube and bulbous body. I don't know of any sponges that look like that. There are
lots of Ascidians that do though Some times the incurrent tube is hard to see and may be
covered in all that algae. Clathrina sponges have tubes just like these but there is no
bulbous bowling-pin lower body like you see in Ascidians But we can you the simple test
:-)
Dave, touch that tube or the body with something and see if it moves. That tube will
contract somewhat if it is an Ascidian.

Hmmm. Could be Boomer, now that I look at it again.
Btw, the first link you posted didn't work for me. It might be a
Netscape thing.

I have Netscape 7.1, as an extra browser, so I checked mine for you. Both links work just

Boomer;
I touched the tubes on the sponge-like critters; they didn't contract. It
was a bit like pushing the end of a flexible drinking straw, they rebounded.
;-)

Ok Dave then sponge it is, BUT an Ascidian is a very highly evolved animal, just below
fish, and it would have retracted the very tip of that tube, closed it somewhat. So I take
it the opening at the tip did not close up at all ? The tube itself can't contract or
close just the tip and it can't close all the way, about half way. If the body wasn't all
covered with algae and it was an ascidian, you could see it move also if you touched it.
