View Full Version : Clown Tang problem - need help

All
Several weeks ago I purchased a healthy looking Clown Tang. It spent 3
weeks in quarantine and then went into my 6*2*2 reef tank. It has now been
in the reef for about 3 weeks. Yesterday it seemed to be a bit quiet and has
stopped swimming backwards and forwards along the front glass. It is still
eating Nori, but now seems to have the beginnings of white spot. All other
fish seem perfectly normal, and water conditions are excellent.
Does anyone have experience with Clown Tangs and similar problems? I have
heard that they are often caught with cyanide which leads to destruction of
the immune system, rendering them susceptible to whitespot. Does anyone
know about this? If so, will the problem be isolated to this fish?
Any advice re next steps will be appreciated.
Thanks

Not sure what the problem may be, but I would put it back into
quarantine untill you find out. I had a recient experience that
started with one fish then on to another and lost 80% of my fish.

I have done some more poking around and it seems that loss of condition is
very common in Clown Tangs, and some people say that unless they are in
large schools, they can't be successfully kept in aquaria. Mine seems to
have settled down -- it is behaving "normally" and is eating (only Nori) but
is still losing weight.
Does anyone have any similar experience?

I have a clown tang and have had him for about a year now. He started out
at about 2-3" and I put him in a quarantine tank. Due to my negligence, he
was in there for about 4 months! He was always healthy even when the tank
started looking like sh**. He would even know when it was feeding time
because when I would put my hand in the tank to get the seaweed clip, he
would actually swim next to my hand rubbing against it. I placed it in my
90 gallon reef tank and he was a little scared because I also had a purple
tang, maroon clown, and a foxface in there with him. Within 1 week, he was
king of the tank. Unfortunately all the other fish stated to stay hidden
because of his belligerent attitude! Well, now I have him in a plastic net
until I can take him into the pet shop to trade him in. He is 4+ inches and
really is a bully, although he loves the owner!

Hi Doug
I should have sent mine to you for training.
I have a Birdnose Wrasse who does the same thing with the clip etc. He is
not aggressive to the other fish , but is a very aggressive feeder.
You can see some pics of him (and the Clown Tang before he died) and others
in my tank at http://community.webshots.com/album/149890982jXnxRs

Thanks Marc
The tank seems to be settling down well now -- I am really enjoying this
