I will be attempting to setup my 75 gallon tank in a couple weeks. I still
am up in the air about SAND or Crushed Coral. I like the look of sand but
have been told that after a year or so you will have a bunch of trouble with
the sand. I guess because of all the stuff dieing in the sand it starts to
create a problem. Crushed Coral on the other hand can be vacuumed out at
every water change. I am going to let the opinions of this post influence
my decision. SO SAND OR CC???? I am going to have a combination of fish
and live rock. I plan on starting up the tank getting some live rock and
then letting the tank run for a couple months before adding any fish.
Another area I could use some help. I have an Amircale wet dry going in to
a reef ready AGA tank. I am not to sure how to hook up all the pvc plumbing
stuff. Does anyone have a diagram I could follow? I assume that one of the
pipes goes to the top of the W/D were the bio balls are and the other goes
back to the tank from the submersible pump. If anyone has any advice they
could give me PLEASE DO. I have been reading a fair share of books but
still have a lot of questions. I also will need to find a Local fish store.
I will be moving in a couple weeks and have no idea what is around me. I
will be in the Swedesboro area if anyone can help with a store near me I
would GREATLY appreciate it. THANKS for any help BILL

Sand can't be bothered, CC can be vacuumed. I vacuum mine every 3
months, roughly. Sand will give you lower nitrates.

How to set up a sump:
http://www.melevsreef.com/what_sump.html

That will answer some questions.

If you plan to use a Wet/dry, don't get any invertebrates because they
can't tolerate the nitrates that thing will produce. Fish will be fine.

It's tough to find you an LFS when you don't list the state you live in.

This is my brand new shiny ¼ cent of a penny for you.
What size of the sand you referring to? Or what type?
Either way I say no to both.
If you referring to a pebble or gravel size sand, you can vacuum it.
What W/D use to get water input section? By pump or by overflow? Beside W/D,
what filteration do you have? If you just have W/D only, it will be as it is
but no invert critter. But if you have a skimmer, then remove the BIOS-balls
/ foam block and replace it with just the skimmer in the ex-BIOS-ball
chamber. Or you can add anything like heater in the ex-BIOS-ball chamber.

Skip the WD filter, these went out wth Noah and his ark.
LR is all you need for decent filtration and IMO a bare base or coral
rubble is easiest.
Get a big sump instead of your proposed WD filter.
In your sump you should plan to have a real good protien skimer and an
algae refugium or algae filter of some sort (do a search on ATS (Algae
Turf Scrubbing) if your not familiar with the concept.
also make sure you can put enough water through the overflow, a decent
reef tank should have something on the area of 20 times the tank
volume, and put at least 10 times over the weir.
I'd suggest a min of 1 x 40mm (1.5") overflow.
Have fun and go slow, ask q's and wait for answers, don't listen LFS
advice, it's generally very poor and sales orientated not aquarist
orientated.
