View Full Version : popeye the clown

July 14th 04, 12:59 AM
My luck seems to be getting really bad. Got home after a unbelievably bad day, grabed a beer
and sat down with the wife to talk about the shift changes and about 15 min later she jumps up and says
"Oh **** I need to check your tank I forgot to turn on the fans this morn. and it was up to 85"
Nice just what I needed. at this point my temp is at 82 so I cranked up the fans and looked for
if anything was floating, all good untill I saw my larger Perc. its one eye is bloated and is hiding in the
rocks. First thought is get him out, can't he's in the rocks. Wonderfull.
Heres the deal now I did a quick search and I confirmed my thoughts that popeye is a fresh
water thing. I'm still going to try and get him out tonight.
Is there marine popeye?
could it have been the temp.?
could the new manderin have introduced it to the tank?( I watched that guy at the lfs for a long time
and everything was fine)
Just one thing after another.

I have read that plenty of people keep their tanks at 82 degrees and that a
spike to 85 is not a big deal.

Not a big deal for fish at least... I seriously doubt this is the cause of
his swollen eye. I have had several swings like that and even more drastic
and all of my "fish" appear to be uneffected.

Yes,

Clowns can get pop-eye. Saw one quarantined with it at my LFS.
I will check my books for you and see what they say about treatment...
I am thinking it is a bacterial infection....

I set up the Q-tank tonight, By the way remind me to clean it when I take it down this time :)
Anyway I managed to get him out.The only thing the LFS had was MelaFix. I put a little more than they
recomended just for the inital dose, then threw in some copper thinking all I need is Ick from stress.
He's not eating in the Q-tank I soaked food in some of the MelaFix and he wouldnt touch it.
I guess we'll see what happens tomarrow.
Oh almost forgot to mention that I sent the wife to my LFS to get the meds for me and Jim was not
but his wife was and also thought that pop-eye was a fresh water thing so the wife called me at work ,Bla Bla Bla.
Thanks guys.

Leave him alone. Mine had it about three months ago and I was advised to
leave him alone. His eye stuck out about a quarter inch for about and slowly
receded. He's just fine now. Sometimes they will lose the eye and will be
fine otherwise. If they have the problem with both eyes they're in trouble
as they'll starve to death.

"
Popeye, common among Clarks and Saddleback Clowns, is actually a symptom and
not a disease. Sometimes one or both eyes of the clownfish may bulge. If
only one eye is affected, the cause is likely external physical damage that
will clear itself within a week, given reasonable environmental conditions.
If it is in both eyes, ask yourself if the affected fish has received any
raw seafood within the previous two to three months. If the answer is no,
the cause of popeye is likely a problem with water quality or external
physical damage and it too will clear itself within two weeks following a
partial water change. If it persists, treatment with chloramphenicol may be
effective. However, if the answer to the raw seafood question is yes, your
fish may have contracted a serious and life-threatening disease called
Ichthyophonus(a.k.a. Ichthyosporidium hoferi). I addition to bulging eyes,
affected fish are usually lethargic and do not feed.... Popeye is the first
obvious sign, and by then the fishes internal organs may have already been
ravaged beyond remedy and the fish is apt to go blind. Later signs of
Ichthyophonus are roughening of the skin caused by the outward penetration
of the internal fungus.
The efficacy of therapeutic agents against fungal infections is uncertain.
Food soaked in a 1% solution of oxyethenol reportedly controls the internal
fungus...."

From Clownfishes by J.D. Wilkerson...

She goes on to say that the disease version of popeye is very rare in her
experience.

Have you tested your water parameters? Possible the fish was in a fight..?
Looks like the best treatment for single eye popeye is good water and no
stress. Quarantine may keep tankmates from harassing him/her while it heals,
but if it does not feed soon, then the stress of being moved to QT was too
much.

I just had to move one of my clowns to QT for treatment of an unknown
parasite. He would not eat until I moved its buddy in too. I just went ahead
and treated both with ParaGuard and KanaPlex from SeaChem. The sick one
recovered in about two weeks and I moved them back after four. Both are
doing great.

I prefer SeaChem's meds. They always respond to an email question for me
within a day.. That means a great deal to me...

Sorry my memory was off in my previous post, that's why I buy the books.. I
cant remember $hit!
Good Luck!

Thanks guys
He did not make it through the night.
I'm shure in my haste to separate him I may have caused his death :(
I got my first tank when I was 5 and have never gotten used to loosing a fish, especially
when I may have done something wrong.
Ya know work really gets in the way of the really important things in life.
On a happy note the manderin seems to be adjusting well, when I can see him that is.
